TT issue...input needed.

Our point is that if you use another old dampener, which they all are now, it will come apart like yours did. However the weight is needed in the TT to help calm vibrations.
Understood about saving costs. We do sell our Super Bearings as a kit for the owner to install in their own TT. In this way you save on shipping and handling costs shipping TTs back and forth.

I think a replacement solution to the factory damper needs to be created. Or a rebuild service. I replaced on terrible torque tube with a not 'ok' torque tube (economics) and now after 6-7 months I'm (because I know what to listen for now) hearing the damper slide around and a slight 'clunk' rattle when I take off . I am 90% sure its the early sounds of the damper sliding and this will eventually likely lead to bearing failure (again.. torque tubes are a #@((! to remove..)
The way I understand it, dampers are 'highly recommended' however if this torque tube continues its downward trajectory I will be looking at a non damper equipped Constantine solution (bite the bullet once, never look at it again, vs nibble on the cookie and have to return to the well..)

We initially looked at a lot of different options before we embarked on a complete redesign of the TT internals. We wanted to make replacements which were an upgrade to the original parts and which would take care of all the issues plaguing our aging TT internals.
The result are the Super Bearings which compared to other solutions, are really very cost effective for what you get and the problems they solve.
Although spending money rebuilding a TT is not as sexy as buying power chips or fancy wheels, it helps restore the greatness of the 928 driving experience.

Well...I spent today just reading and researching. Also noticed my trans mounts were needing replacment but at the "no longer available" prices that wa going to have to wait. I did use one of the exhaust hangers and cut it down to space the trans back up. Have no idea how long it will last but it did pick it us to where it needs to be. If anyone has a better idea...I would LOVE to hear it before this goes back in.
Also I noticed that after just 18 months and 3000 miles my half shaft boots are cracking AGAIN!!! Surely they should last longer than 18 months. Will need to figure a fix for that before it all goes back together. Mounted the rear wheels to see how it sat with the trans mounts modified...thought it looked cool so here it is. A photo moment rarely seen. I see I will need new back tires as well soon.
Anyway...I have had a set of motor mounts in my "parts box" for 4 years so I guess now is a good time to do that as well.
Hope to have a parts order going out after thanksgiving. Trying to stay busy...this time of year is the worse for me....but it too shall pass right.
Back to the TT...I am thinking about leaving the damper OUT and using 3 bearings instead. Thoughts?

Get bearings that have rubber seals and then, pin the bearing carriers. The factory bearings only had metal dust sheild. You can get both type of bearings at any bearing supply store. They are around $20 each. As for the cast iron dampner, get rid of it.

Dean,
Looks like your tires are backwards...(rotationally) ...????
Three bearings (pinned as Imre suggests) should work. Might be a biotch to get in the tube without the elogated carriers though.
Imre would be able to advise, I'm sure.

If Im reading this correctly when Dean removed the TT the bearings and their carriers basically fell out so I would assume are unusable leaving only a few options; new Porsche carries and bearings; Constantines fabulous upgrades or trade the bad TT for a fully rebuilt Constantine tube.
We collectively have done some great things in the past to help our fellow comrades in cars so why do we not help fund the TT. Given Dean is in the US perhaps we can do similar as to what we did for Kibort when we bought him an engine.
$10 x 100 donations and we're there........what say you all?

Three Super Bearings are still $580.00, plus shipping. Have been so for a few years.
They come with install instructions/photos, some items to help with their install and a two (2) year warranty.
Heck, even with one of our a brand new 928 automatic drive shafts, the total price will still be below $1000.00.
We understand that some owners cannot afford our products, but it does not help anyone when misinformation is spread about our products.
Cheers,

thx for the clarification Constantine.........with my $10 proposal we need 60 folks to support the cause for 3 bearings.
We can do it guys and gals!

Hating this thread. I have a rattle at idle that I thought was likely a loose heat shield. Now it could be anything from flex plate rivets to torque tube bearings. Ugggh.
