is it difficult to obtain a title to a car without one?
S some may have seen from my other thread, I am acquiring a second 928. it does not however have a title. The seller got it from another person off of CL, and that person never got the title from the person he bought it from.
I had planned on using the second car to finish my 1980 US. As it turns out though, it is a 1984 Euro, and from what I have been told is a much better performing car. So short of switching everything over from the 84 euro over to my 1980...which I think would not only be very time consuming, but also difficult... my only other option is to swap the interior and some parts off of my 80 and try to get a title for the 1984 Euro.
so basically, the car is 3 owners removed. I live in Georgia, and the car is coming from Florida. I was told that it would be risky to simply switch the vin plate from my 1980 and put it on the 1984 Euro. I know it is a crime. I am wondering though if I run the vin from 1984 and it comes up clean (not stolen, etc) I am wondering if it would be ever something that would be noticed.
does anyone know how to get a title for a car like this?

Well, a title search will be required and the previous (last titled owner) will have to get a registered letter. He will then have like 30 days to respond or something like that and he could say, "You didn't buy that car...its mine" and then you are screwed!

Georgia does not require a title on any motor vehicle earlier than 1986.
Here is the appropriate section from the DMV website showing what you will need to register the car:
• The last certificate of registration*
• Bill(s) of sale
*If the registration was not issued in your name and there are no spaces for
transferring ownership, original, signed bill(s) of sale must be submitted
establishing a complete and correct chain of ownership from the registered
owner up through you, the current owner. You must also submit an original
Certificate of Inspection, Form T-22B, completed and signed by a Georgia
law enforcement officer, your Georgia County Tax Commissioner, or
his/her designated employee, after he/she makes a visual inspection of your
vehicle's identification number plate, a/k/a serial plate. Any officer
completing the Certificate of Inspection, Form T-22B, must query the
G.C.I.C., Georgia Crime Information Center, to determine if the vehicle is
stolen and he/she shall indicate that the query was made on the face of the
Form T-22B. This form will not be accepted if it is incomplete or contains
alterations or erasures.
Since you bought the car in Florida, you will be required to pay Georgia sales tax on the purchase price as shown on the bill of sale.

There is NEVER a good reason to switch the VIN.
As long as the car isn’t stolen there shouldn’t be a problem.
Worst case is you track down the last registered owner and obtain an affidavit to release the title.

What I said is WORST CASE that should apply to ANY STATE in the US.

I just titled a car in Nebraska where the owners had passed away. It was a process of about 2 months but it worked out in the end. I am sure almost every state has red tape that can be navigated. From what Wally is saying Georgia sounds easy.

thanks wally. so since the owner of the car right now is bought it from a guy and there are three owners, do I just need a bill of sale from the guy i am buying it from?
As for the vin switch, I was asking if in this case it would be legal since niether cars are stolen. I have no intention of breaking the law.

that is wht I thought when I posted it, but since that time the DMV site says i need a title. I guess I misinterpreted what it said, and it must only apply to czrs made after 1986.

I had a similar situation when I lived in Iowa. I had to go through the process and get what is called a "bonded title". Your DMV should be able to walk you through it or search online. Just like what was mentioned above a certified letter was sent to the previous owner with a 30 day response window. Once it cleared that and the VIN search to prove it wasn't stolen I had to purchas a surety bond from my insurance agency. I ended up selling the car but I believe at least in Iowa and Nebraska the "bonded" mark on the title can be removed after 2 years. They won't do it automatically, you have to request it.

You can probably find your answers here.

I have personally had very good luck dealing with MN DMV via email. I was amazed at how quickly they responded to my inquiries and I was able to get everything arranged by email and for what I was doing I was able to email a scan of the signed forms and didn’t even have to go in to sign in person.

I am hoping that it is going to be done without drama, but my life seldom works like that. The guy I am buying it from has no problem giving me a bill of sale. My only possible problem is that the car is 3 owners removed from me. Meaning the guy I am buying from is not on the title.. and does not have a title. He got the car from a guy who posted it on craigs list. Apparently, that guy bought it from the actual titled owner, but for some reason never got the title from him. I am hoping that when I run the VIN number ( I will have it on wednesday), that everything turns out to be clean with no evidence of the car being stolen or what not.
If that is the case, I will at least have a bill of sale from the guy I am buying it from. Hopefully when I bring that to DMV along with the inspection form, I will be able to register the car. I am hoping I will be good. I kind of have my heart set on this 84 Euro now. The more i read about it, the more I want it.
