This has been a really interesting read so far. People are sooooo different.

I do wonder why you would ask questions when you already have the answers, but there you go.

I had an experience a few weeks back. Guy working in a hardware store asked me about my 928, said he didn't think there were any left on the road and then quoted Top Gear and other sources to say how failed a design they were - "the motors fail..". Then he talked at me for the next 10 minutes about his blown Ford and how great it was. I was really disappointed, I thought anyone into cars would at least try and admire someone else's choice.

Ha - allow me to be an out and out snob - the 944 was the ENTRY level Porsche during its run, the 928 was the TOP END level Porsche during its run. If you don't think there are significant engineering differences based on that fact alone then you are a bigger fool than you already appear.

@ Ponty--For the record, Top Gear (UK) are big 928 fans and your new acquaintance was clueless in addition to being tactless.

After reading through 944j's posting history, it is clear he knows everything and is not open to taking advice from those that actually do know.

He made lots of friends on the 944 board, did the same back in 2008 on this 928 forum.

His MO is just as we have seen on this thread. Come in, ask a question that seems innocuous and then start flailing away at those that try to help.

Congrats on becoming only the 2nd person on my ignore list.

Bye 944J

Yes I too am just adding him to my ignore list (which is very short).

There is only so much time - I'm no longer willing to waste it on idiots who already know the wrong answer to the questions they are asking.

Really just a troll guys - who knows if there is a real 928 here... and if there is - there won't be for long...

Alan

I had the two front seats redone about three years ago. Cost me $1000 and I was not terribly happy with the result. I suspect, however, that the price was appropriate but you really have to be sure of who does the work. In my case I selected a person based on the quality of other work he did. When it came to my job, he had a flood in his shop and had to move to a new location. Mine turned into a "hurry-up" job after he moved and the result showed it.

Two years ago I was tee-boned with the result that the insurance paid me over $6000 to get the car redone. I selected a very small shop with a one man operation. I had used him before for another vehicle. Slow; very slow; very, very slow but, after almost a year of delays the end result was imaculate. Not everyone would be happy with such a delay but, since I did not use the car during the winter, it was not all that bad of a deal.

You do get what you pay for but sometimes a break might come your way.

Not realizing that there were six pages of comments on this thread, I wrote the above thinking I was helping a guy who wanted to fix up his car. It would appear that he was looking for an arguement instead. Ignoring that fact, here is how I view my 928.

My '87 928S4 is a one-owner; that owner being me. Still, that does not make it a pampered automobile. Some of the prices that were floated around on this thread seemed reasonable to me; others made me gulp for air. My 928 would never qualify for a concours 'de elegance or even your typical small town car show. I drive it every day. It's sitting outside my office right now and will drive me home tonight, a distance of 30 miles. It does that most every day. It gets washed a couple times a week in a car wash which would be a no-no for those who lovingly hand rub their car once or twice a week. Since repainting a year ago, it has not seen a wax job. Gotta get around to it one of these days.

In short, I have been in love with the same car for almost 26 years but I treat it as a daily driver, not a prized museum piece (I've also been in love with the same woman for over fifty years and she is prized but also not as a museum piece). It (the Porsche, not my wife) gets some maintenance but also some deferred maintenance when my social security check won't stretch far enough. The entire car runs well but not as well as it did when it was new. Still, the interior and the exterior are fairly close to showroom appearance as long as you don't look too close. Its a great car and I hope it will last for another 25 years. I know I wont.
