Talking with Chuck the other night ... never been able to tell from WSM or other published materials ... were there ever factory 'sport springs'? Some cars have M474 sport shocks, did these come with different springs? Did GT have different springs than S4?

I see posts mentioning "two or three-dot" markings in different colors, do those represent actual differences in spring rates, or are they some kind of 'tolerance group' concept to optimize each car's ride/handling feel ?

There were some different springs on earlier cars with the Bilstein option.
On later cars - 88+ - the club sport springs were available 89 to 91 GT.
Nothing on the GTS cars but stock.

Well Bless your heart, Tom. Did you discuss ride height as well?

P.S. Good to see you at Third Coast.

Jenny Craigs for the passenger might help.

So, there were 'sport springs' that came on early cars with Bilsteins, and later were an option on 89 - 91 GT?

CS Clubsport Springs are not currently available and may be NLA so a mute point.
On my GTS I went with Eibach springs as my stock ones had sagged to the point the best camber adjustment I could get was 2.5 Degrees on the rear and in particular the drivers side. Some of this was caused by the rear camber bushes.

Short answer Tom, yes. The WSM has a whole list of springs that were designated differently by paint marks applied to a coil of each spring. Generally, 1 spot of paint was a softer spring than 2 spots or 3. There were also different color spots (ie. green, orange, blue), but I really don't remember offhand what the different colors meant.

John is correct about the different "spots" but now they all supercede to one part number.
CS Springs were only available for the front IIRC.

Tom-

Old post of mine with pics:

S4+ front springs are 928 343 511 09, marked brown with 1, 2, or 3 brown paint marks (see WSM page 40-46 for spring rates) , while rears are 928 333 531 14, marked with 1, 2, or 3 blue marks.

Pretty sure that when you ordered the 474 sport shock option on an 89-91 GT, you got Boge Red's with 3-brown-paint-mark front springs. I think the CS springs only came on the Clubsport and SE cars.

I have some Clubsport springs on the front of my GTS 928.343.511.12.504. with 2 orange stripes.

The rear springs shown I bought new in 2007, didn't get any say in how many blue paint marks would be on them. And they were more expensive than the clubsport front springs.

The fronts were 928 343 511 09 401, 09 402 & 09 403 for the different color dots but now all SS to 928 343 511 404. They are sold in pairs

Rears were 928 333 531 14 301, 14 302 & 14 303 but now SS to 928 333 531 14 304.

Just as a data point - my 90GT did NOT have the 474 sport shock option and as expected came with Boge greys. However, it DID come with 3 brown dot fronts and 3 blue dot rears. How the factory determined what springs to put on non-474 cars is a mystery to me, I would think they'd get one of the softer spring sets but mine certainly didn't. YMMV
