Was thinking the same thing. Start with fuses and relays, go from there. And, there are better ways to check for spark. We used to do that trick on freshmen in auto-hobby class… “here, ground this coil wire while I crank the engine.”
My green wire problem on my 84 caused an erratic spark (and ran like crap)--not a "no start". Anyway, glad it worked out—the Lord does work in mysterious ways.

Linderpat, I thank you for the advice. I have been bitten by her once before from a bad plug wire that had a split in it. And let me say, it definitely was not fun. (I have since replaced the set). How should I check for spark next time? I have a digital meter, would that work?

For checking the spark, I usually just attach the inductive clamp of a timing light to each lead I'm testing to confirm there is spark to each cylinder. Works fine without the shock value.
