Cannot answer your questions, but can say mine is in same condition....cant really find an affordable original solution, but will probably go the Magnaflow route....still want to weld up the old one, like you for the experience....been about 20 years since I did any real metal welding....

I'm sure you did, but just in case, did you check 928 International for a 78? I know they don't have a 79, but might have a 78 and would be $75 with half off sale. I think Dan the Pod Guy, RIP, had a spare 78 muffler too. You might want to check with his estate. I think someone on Rennlist was managing the sale of his 928 stuff. You could check the thread.

I looked, but not too hard...when I bought the car in May, I had planned on getting it running by end of summer, but after 15 years of trying to pull it together, we were able to get approval to build a new home in June, and had to move to a small rental. I am doing the AC in the new house, so every weekend since June has been spent working on the house, very little car time....long story short...not even running yet, so I just spend my nights looking at forum threads and parts the wife wont let me have....I do know that if I can get her to run, she will be loud....there is no resonator, and the bottom of the pumpkin looks like Swiss cheese!

Always wanted to see someone plumb a dump tube and trigger the solenoid via WOT or similar.

Or you could try to squeeze a CVT muffler in there instead for a CFM driven flow. They have good reviews for an S4 install on here somewhere -- a Poll thread titled Borla or Magnaflow IIRC.

So I cut my welding teeth on what turns out to be one of the most difficult things to weld; a muffler. To make matters worse, the gas connection to the welder was not seated properly and so all of the welding I did on this muffler was essentially without any gas Given that, burn through was a major problem with the original muffler metal. This was more of a learning experience for me (including how to properly connect the gas tube to the welder) and I wouldn't recommend it unless you don't mind a bit of a Frankenmuffler. Below are a couple of pics I snapped of the painted final result. I'll have it as a spare for when I need to refurb its replacement (hopefully I'll be able to do a much better job of that one when the time comes).
