Agreed, it does make it a lot easier if you pull the transmission bolts (2x) and release tension on the e-brake cable and move the trans back a few inches, or as much as is allowed. This is for both auto and 5 speeds. Obviously the 5 speed will be able to go back a bit more than the auto, but every inch helps on putting it back in.

the CV joints dont have to be touched
the whole trans will slide back along with the CV joints

If possible move the car from under the engine rather than the other way around. It's safer. Once the engine can be lowered it will be more stable.
