Parking, door dings, rub strips.
Hey guys,
Just wondering how much effort people put into finding isolated parking spaces when they are out and about in their 928's?
For me, the only time I park next to anyone else is when I have to. Doesn't matter what vehicle I am in, but especially not in the 928.
I'd rather walk the extra 50 feet at the supermarket or at the office and be able to pull in to the space easily and not have to worry about dinging someones else's door, or them dinging mine.
Drives my wife and kids crazy.
I'm curious what others are doing.

One time I parked my car in the middle of an empty shopping center lot far, far away from any other cars.
When I came back there was a black Mercedes SL600 parked RIGHT AGAINST my car - couldn't have been more than a half inch between the cars! Only two cars in that area of the lot.
Turns out it was just a buddy of mine dicking with me. Had his wife guide him in so he could get as close as possible without hitting my car...

I had a no rub strip 944 and even though I took extreme measures I always ended up with dings. I usually park away from most people as much as possible but the rub strips do help in case of an idiot parking next to me.

I am out rurally, so when at Loew's, Walmart, and other parking areas, so it's not so congested that I can park at distance but not be to far out.

I'm pretty OCD about this ... I avoid trucks and SUVs (hard in Texas!) since the lower edge of their doors will typically open out along the upper fender line. And I won't park next to any Camaro or Firebird ever ... lol!
All else being equal, if I do have to park with cars on either side I play the probabilities and leave a little extra room on my right since every car has a driver and only a fraction have a passenger. So my right side has the greatest risk of being dinged.

I HATE door dings and do take measures to avoid them in my DD as well. It almost never fails, though, that when I park away from other cars, I come out to find that someone chose to park next to me, usually closer than they had to. I also look for end spots, avoid parking next to beaters, pick-ups, minivans, and SUV's when possible.
I had parked my old allroad at Lowes away from other cars, only to come out and find that a shopping cart had blown accross the parking lot, at what must have been a high rate of speed, into driver's side rear door, leaving much more than a door ding - can't win sometimes. (Another pet peeve is when shoppers don't return their carts to the collection areas.) So, sometimes seeking shelter between other cars has a benefit, as long as there is room for full door swing.
Oh, and my wife's Mini has remained unscathed from door dings and bumper rubs, even though it is a commuter car to downtown Boston and sits in a big lot or on the street every day - until somone decided to shoot it with a BB gun, leaving a prefect dimple and paint chip down to bare metal in the driver's door.

I park far away, look for islands, usually keep the passenger side toward the island, and park close to it. The 928 is actually pretty tough and resistant to dings compared to some cars. I used to own an RX-7 turbo and the thin skin on that car would get dinged just by looking at it funny.

The only time I don't mind parking between cars is when there are 928s on both sides of mine.
But, no matter what car I'm in, I try to avoid parking next to someone else. I don't mind walking a little farther than I need to. My wife is on board with this practice also!

I try parking next to the cart return - acts as a guard for my car. My wife's car used to get the Dent Wizard PDR treatment. These guys have a route and go dealer to dealer in there little trucks. They are very good at removing dents. Ran about $75 cash per panel and I didn't go thru the dealer.

I park in wide open areas and, just to be sure, I angle the car to the parking strips painted on the asphalt. Living in Wyoming, I don't have too many problems with heavily populated parking lots. Having been t-boned a few years ago (drivers side rear quarter panel) I had the car repainted and I'm not taking chances.
