Help ! Sudden No Auto Gear Shift

Most likely an axle came loose and fell off the stub axle coming out of the transmission. The car won't move, if this happens. Pull the emergency brake up hard (or have someone sit in the car, with the brake on), put it in drive, and see if one of the output flanges from the transmission is spinning, without the axle spinning. It happens when someone uses an impact, not a torque wrench, to tighten the c/v joints.
Don't put it in reverse, with your body back there looking under the car, in case the thing decides to suddenly engage and move!
Don't forget, I've still got a couple brand new factory transmissions, complete with torque convertors and limited slips, in stock, for immediate delivery.

I'm not clear on where to observe the spinning of an output flange.

Malcolm, I did not have it running. I was expecting (and hoping) to see the linkage detached. After I get instruction on where look, I will go back and check things.

If the torque convertor is spinning the issue is narrowed to the gbox, diff, shafts etc.
what colour is the tranny fluid? age?

ok.......with the engine running the torque tube shaft should be spinning which spins the torque convertor, once verified check the wheels spin when in gear (ca in the air, safely on jack stands etc).

ATF red, changed last year or about 10-12k ago.
Also checked status of rear pinch bolt at about that time. Position and torque OK.
Still would like to know where to observe the output flange spinning so I could check at the same lift.

Will go back and look at converter status.

before you run the car in drive then go under it to look ..dont do this....
FIRST jack it up and inspect the half shafts to see if one has come loose from its mount point on the trans output flange.
There isnt much that can cause the trans not to go into park with the shifter ..
UNLESS you might have put the car into park while it was still moving in that case internal damage may have occurred to the park pawl

I actually put a fair amount of miles on that day. Nice back country road driving up here. Pulled in to park the car. Started her up 20 minutes later and no shift. Put in Park and she started to roll down the slight grade I was on.
