When I did this the first time, it seemed to me that I also had removed the whole ring. What worked for me was taking a screw driver and catching the edge of the O ring and striking it carefully towards the center. So the O ring will collapse to the middle and then you can get a pair of pliers to twist it out. Just be careful at the first strike that you are hitting the O ring and not the bridge metal. Once it starts deforming you will see enough space to only catch the O ring and not the surrounding metal.
Hope that helps.

Use some Wurth HHS-K on the rear thermostat seal when you install it. I got this tip from Greg Brown and he knows these engines.

Default Success with Thermostat O-Ring

Bilal's suggestion worked fine, not wanting to risk using a hammer anywhere near the casting, I prised up the lip edge with a knife then used pliers to give it a couple of twists and it was out.

Jeff, what is this Wurth HHS-K?

Alex
