Was the Dexron the current-version Dexron VI?

It might be possible to add a make-shift (pun intended) guide tube to make the cable stiff again. Perhaps split a piece of tubing, work it over the cable where the cable is thinnest, then hose-clamp it over the existing aluminum stub. A new cable would be better. You might be able to buy a used cable, but I don't think that I would go thru that installation hassle for a used one.

Wally-I checked three of the four sites and only found the cable assembly on 928INT. I felt, as you do, that getting a used one might save a few bucks, but probably not a good idea. This ones a keeper (hopefully).

So far as the fluid goes, the only reference to number was on the back of the bottle. I have the cable assembly on order and will just make a day of both jobs.

Chris-I did not find a boot.?.? Any guidance?

Thanks again for all of your input.

You need 9 quarts (and be sure to let the Torque Converter drain).

Default Fluid

Which Redline? I didn't think you could even get the straight up RL ATF product anymore.

Redline offering to match Dexron VI should be their "D6" fluid. D4 was the former Dexron offering.

IIRC their standard high temp ATF is more like Type F.

I may have an old recommendation from them regarding the 722 trans, if I locate it I'll post it up.

I would take the Max Life back and get an approved Dexron VI. GM no longer licenses Dexron other than VI, and says that VI is a far better fluid. My limited experience supports that, and I think that Earl Gilstrom has also had good results in a 928. GM also says that the new specs are so tight that any approved Dexron VI is equally good. Walmart's house brand is GM-approved, and cheaper than any that I have found.

I will take a picture of the recommended usage on the back of the max life. It doed say VI.

The redline was ordered from Summitt Racing. I will check the specs tonight.

Update: New part on BO, used part ships today. I have set aside the weekend of 10/6 to perform the job(s). I will keep my eye out for the boots between now and then.

Thank you to all that have offered your guidance. I will try to document as best I can and post pics for future reference.

Received the used part this week from 928 INT (Thanks Tom). I am kind of nervous about pulling the old cable. I understand that I will have to pull the tail pipe to have good access to the area, but how do I snake the new cable up the tunnel to the shifter? Does it just ride on top of the heat shields or are there brackets that must be dealt with?

I think I tied mine to the old one and pulled through.

I could only get selector cable boots from Pelecan Parts, for my 86.
