MrMerlin and LT Texan you both saved the day for me. your wrench combos worked great. Thanks.
I'm sure this won't be my last cry for help. Well off to the next step.

A 3/4" pull handle, extension and socket works much better than any 1/2" set-up. I have sheared a Craftsman 1/2" extension cleanly in two, then removed the same bolt easily with a 3/4" set-up. Even Harbor Freight tools work fine for this...

As mentioned above, do not try this with the engine on a stand! It is surprisingly easy to turn that puppy over on the floor.

Well mine is on a stand right now, guess i might have to use ratchet straps suspended from a few rafters to stop it from rotating. Or put it on the ground laying it on one bank of cylinders, then having someone sit on it (or a couple people lol).

What kind of pre-treatment of the bolt should be done? How common is it to break this bolt?

Squirt in your favorite penetrating oil. This is a very stout bolt. No worries there.

A good use of an impact wrench.

As Glen says, a good impact wrench will do the trick with it on the stand.

Be careful if you use a Milwaukee cordless one, though...

This.. I have a dual hammer 1/2" impact gun. Works just fine for undoing crank bolts and rear axle nuts.
