Default Shifter linkage problem - '84 auto

Well, looks like I may have a tricky situation on my hands. I went to move my car out of the way and soon noticed that the shifter would not move beyond drive. No amount of force would move it further. While the shifter indicated it was in drive, it was not actually in gear. I dropped the exhaust down and removed the heat shield necessary to see the selector on the side of the transmission. Sure enough, it wasn't moving when the shifter was! So I took the shifter apart from inside and removed the 3 10mm bolts that fasten the shifter mechanism to the body of the car. The shifter came out with the broken linkage still attached. Now I'm left wondering.. Do I have to remove the exhaust, heat shields, torque tube, and transmission completely to replace the linkage??

Go back to to the transmission and see if you can move the selector from there with your hands. If so you only have a cable issue and that is easy to replace. If not, well, let us know.

Sean, thank you for the quick reply. I really appreciate it. I just went back out there, and no, I cannot move the selector.

Finally got it figured out. I removed what was left of the linkage from the selector and removed it from the car. This allowed for the selector to be easily transitioned by hand. I can't determine whether the shifter mechanism or the linkage, or both, were the problem. I have a parts car so I will replace all of the parts in question. For those wondering, you do not have to remove the torque tube to replace the linkage. It can easily be navigated to the interior of the car with the TT in place. I would recommend removing the exhaust and heat shields as it is worth the trouble to gain the easy access.
