I think ABS was optional '85 and standard '86?

Air can't get in at the top so very little fluid drains out when you
crack open the system. It's a simple fix but it works very welll.
My spare reservoir cap came from a VW in a breakers yard,
can't remember which model.
Similar effect can be achieved with a little Saran Wrap or similar as a temporary layer between the cap and the reservoir. You MUST remember to remove it before flight however, same as Brian's sealed cap.

is the MC an original part if so then a new MC should cure this issue,
also if there is a bias valve somewhere in the brake system then it should be opened and possibly replaced, the Bias valves on the ABS cars get full of gunk and corroded , so similar things could be part of your issue.
The MC will get corroded internally and usually after doing a brake bleed where the pedal is fully depressed the seals will go past the corroded areas of the bore and then they will leak.

My best guess is that you have 2 issues a leaking MC and a corroded Bias valve

My plan is to work on this over the weekend, along with a DIY alignment. If I can't get the pedal to where I'm happy I'll replace all the brakes lines, etc this winter when I change out the front brakes to S4's.
MrMerlin, the brake and clutch master and the clutch slave were all changed out by the PO and are pretty clean. If I get to a point where replacing everything doesn't work then I'll break down and change out the MC but that will be my last resort as I can still vividly remember changing out the blue hose when the engine was out, I can't imagine what kind of job it is to change the MC with the engine in. Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know my progess tomorrow.
