If the breather hose that come from cam cover and disappears underneath the intake is toast, will that prevent car from staying cranked? 87S4 ran great, went into store and now it won't stay cranked. Just ordered the hose. I knew I was on borrowed time. It cranks and tries to run but eventually dies

That's the problem with crank. You don't stay cranked and always want more.

Are you just buying parts till you find the problem? Don't do that. If that hose was toast it might cause hard starting since it would be "false" (unweighed) air thus causing a pretty lean AFR, especially for a cold start.

However, if it didn't start when the motor was hot from being run previously, then i would say it's obviously a lack of fuel or a restriction, since you don't need a very rich mixture (or shouldn't) to start up an engine that is already at or just below operating temp. Check that your throttle bowden cable is properly adjusted. Cold start valve too maybe?

The idle speed motor on the S4s can go bad and cause idling problems. Do a search as there is a WD40 fix for it.

Cranking an engine is the WHA,WHA, WHA noise of the starter motor turning the engine ! When it fires and runs it is no longer cranking or "staying cranked" . Goes back to the days when cars had a crank sticking out the front and you literally hand cranked turned the engine trying to get it to fire. Would sometimes fire and spin the crank and break the arm of the guy trying to start the car.
So your car is stating then stalling. And as pointed out unmetered air getting into the intake below the mass air sensor can cause a lean misfire and idle problems. You might consider doing yourself a favor and replace all the hoses.

I just had a breatrher hose cut recently (do a search and you will find it and see a picture) and that was likely causing idle instability and stalling.
Once I asked for opinions and advice here all suggested a full intake refresh. I ordered the parts and as I removed the intake lots of rubber and plastic parts were bad.
As per above, you should look into other rubber and vacuum hoses, plus seals and clean throtle plate and components,
