I will try to get whatever pictures I can. The bend in the hose (where the outside air temperature element is located) in on the front drivers side wheel well liner piece and I would need to take of the liner to pull that - so that will probably not happen.

I will show you where the hose mounts on the plastic liner as I have my old one still kicking around.

Let me see what I get reach with my camera and send - probably later tonight or early tomorrow.

Thanks Glenn,

Those pics help a lot. I will try that positioning tomorrow. What I really need to know is where the tube comes forward relative to the front side of the alternator. I have not tried positining it so low. I will give that a try.

Default More pictures

Okay - best I can do for additional pictures without removing wheel liners and front spoilers (just a bit too lazy to do that today )

The first two pictures are from the 90. It shows how the hose runs from the alternator between the space at the front spoiler up to the wheel cover.

For the older style cars, here are two pictures from a 86.5 showing the how running from the alternator through the bottom pan and up to the wheel liner.

As well, here are three pictures of the wheel liner (from the 90) showing the tire side, the back side, and then the back side where the metal bracket goes that holds the alternator hose in the U shape (some tape showing where the bracket mounts). The outside air temperature sensor goes just before this bracket (on the alternator side).

I now wish I had taken pictures of this assembly as I replaced the hose, the outside temperature sensor, and the front wheel liner plate.

With these pictures and then looking at PET (link from Rogers 928sRus website - hot links - no advertisement intended - just a link), you should be able to figure out the rest of the installation that I cannot show you.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Glenn

Well I gave up.

I spent the last two days trying to engineer multiple mounting methods to get the alignment right only to figure out that there is not enough clearance behind the alternator to allow the shroud I got to fit.

It appears to be hitting the engie at the top and at the pressure transmitter.

I can only assume the original alternator was not as deep as the Bosch AL115X or there is another PN shroud.

If someone else has pulled this off please let me know how you did it.

I did get the alternator back in and it seems to be working better now that it is not caked in dried oil.

I fixed, i hope, the oil leaks so perhaps the hot air will be less impactful with a better flow.

Jim--

I have that alternator installed on my S4, fits fine with the oriinal shroud and the snorkel location as shown in the pix, low and on the driver's side (US cars) of the alternator. It's a Very Close fit in the rear, but it does fit. The factory added a thin foam gasket between the alternator body and the shroud to make a tight seal; I made one out of thin foam weatherstripping when I put the new alternator in.

Thanks Dr. Bob.

Are there some differences in the 5L versus the 4.5L that might be driving thefit issue for me?

The shroud I got, PN 928 603 133 04, sticks out past the edge of the AL115X alternator by a good 1/4 inch. I made a sheet metal ring that I secured with to 3 threaded holes in the back of the alternator and then attached posts through the bottom side of that to attach the shroud.

With the alternator and shroud in place I can't get the back end of the alternator up high enough to get the through bolt to align with the rear threaded boss.

As the visibility is tough with the alternator in place it is hard to see where it is hitting.

Jim--

Unfortunately, I took a couple week of holiday so K could go play in a golf tournament in Oregon. I decided to take the opportinity to disassemble and refinish the garage doors, so there's no access to the car or the lift right now for detailed pictures of the original fitment for you.

It might be interesting to compare the AL-115x housing depth vs the original P-R alternator that came in your car.

I did a quick measurement yesterday.

From the back side of the mounting lug on the alternator to the end of the battery post (longest item on the back of the alternator it is ~3 inches. I will get a measurement from back of mount to end of case this week.

The shround is 2.25 inches at its deepest point not including the seal.

I forgot to get a picture of the alternator installed, was trying to get it back togather and running after the front end seal refresh. I will take some photos this week.

How did this end up Jim? Did you ever get the shroud to fit?

Do you know if your car had a Paris-Rhone on it when it left the factory?

I was never able to get it to fit and moved on to other projects.

Not sure what it left the factory with and assume what is on it was a replacement at some point in the cars history.
