Default Plastic tabs on back of radiator side tanks

I'm replacing the radiator on my '88 S4. The old radiator did not have tabs on the back of the plastic side tanks but my new one does, and the tabs seem to get in the way of putting my fans back in.

The car is an automatic so the radiator has the two side coolers in it also.

Anyone know what these tabs are for? Is it safe to just trim them off?

Thanks in advance!!!

Yep, just saw em off. Earlier models used them to hold a fan shroud and the replacement tanks are made to be used on both ...

Funny - I cut notches in the S4 fans I installed into my 79

Oh, and I think the "evolution" in your avatar is backwards

Thanks for the replies!

I do like the extra structural support those tabs would give if I can get them to bite onto something. Especially since there is a crack in my fan housing already and a missing tab.
