WINDSHEILD REPLACEMENT QUESTION

Well, after I loaded the 928 onto the trailer to move back to Vegas, I hit the rearview mirror with my head as I got out through the passenger door. This cracked the windshield, so Hagerty's is sending me a check. My questions are:
Is there any difference in the windshield for a US car versus a Euro car? I just want to make sure there is no problem when Safelite brings the glass out to replace it.
Does the molding have to be replaced as well when replacing the glass?
I have called safelite and they sourced a windsheild, but they are saying the molding will need replaced too. Hagerty's has already given the price they will pay and are sending a check out to me for that amount, so it is up to me to make it happen. I just want it all to go off without a hitch. Thanks in advance for your responses.

The trim does not need to be replaced. It is designed to be removed and remounted. No difference is US and Euro as far as shape...there may be a tint difference.
The problem a lot of folks have with the trim coming off without bending is too much mastic. Just go slow and easy.

Thanks Dean. Any pointers on getting the trim off (tools to use or method)? I think I will remove it mysel. Safelite wants to just replace it. ![banghead](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/banghead.gif)
Joe told me you are going to be moving to Vegas soon. We'll have to get together when you do.

They sell a special tool at most auto parts stores. Just ask for a windshield trim removal tool. It has a curved head. The trim is held in with clips that are riveted to the body. You pry the clip away and pull up ( away ) the trim. Thats just the top trim. The sides will not need to be removed.
I will try to find a pic when I did mine.
Thanks...I do have plans to relocate to Vegas in the spring. Looking for to the move a lot.

Look at the first pic. I hope it helps. Just slide the tool under and run in down the length. You will 'feel" the clips. I THINK there is just 4 or so.

Original Euro glass has a layer of plastic on the interior side of the glass...so you probably won't find and original replacement anywhere here. But..of course, shape wise, the US glass will fit so no problems there..and the original euro glass was probably hazy anyway (due to the inability to clean the inside plastic liner properly).

The fancy sandwich windshield of glass/plastic/glass/cosmetic liner which also has an embedded antenna started in 85, prior to that there was an exterior metal aerial antenna. The embedded antenna saved .7 hp at speed from drag according to porsche. For earlier years I do not know if they had the sandwich glass.

My 84 Euro had the OE Sekuraflex windsheild with the plastic layer on the inside of the glass, no internal antenna. I broke mine by accidentally hitting the rearview mirror also. I replaced it with a new Sigla windsheild, without the plastic coating on the inside. It fits perfectly and is much clearer than the Sekuraflex. Some had cautioned against using Chinese glass that is more readilly available, so I specified the Sigla glass, and the installer ordered it and my insurance company was happy enough to pay for it. It came from Finland, I beleive. No new trim was needed.

That info helps. Also the reason I have read about chinese glass being unpopular is that the optics are screwy, because it isn't formed right or made right it will play tricks on your eyes just like a fun house mirror.

I've got the Chinese glass (Feng Shin or something like that) in my GT (smoking deal from Mark at a Sharktoberfest way back)..and for me it's fine. Seems to pit easier than the Sigla (Pilkington) but the optics on mine are fine. No worries though as I picked up a spare Sigla for when the cheaper glass breaks

Thanks for the information guys. I am going to remove the trim myself to salvage it and safelite can reinstall it with the new glass. I have a set of trim tools from harbor freight that I will try using to remove it.

I just had my windshield replaced with pelkington classic. Looks great and its sigla. Total cost was $317. Some reason it took the installer 5 weeks to get the glass. The installer blamed pelkington for the delay and pelkington blamed the installer.
