Perhaps I was remiss in not bothering to explore in more detail and it wasn't until Mike reprimanded me for not supplying details of the car that I started to investigate. You may have noticed that I've acquired an avatar in the last 24 hours and my location is now displayed. I'd always wondered about that - duh!

My obtuse titles are probably a product of my British personality defect of always avoiding specifics. They are not intended to offend. I was under the impression searches are based on key words in both the text and the title.

My freeloading has never been fruitless. The inspired experts on this site have solved innumerable problems my local Porsche specialist had no idea about. For this, I'm eternally appreciative.

Until recently I had to rely on my local Porsche expert (sic) for almost all my repairs. It's only recently that I've resorted to my own devices and my foray is bound to stumble occasionally. The WSM is a whole new world to me.

I was unaware of the advantages of paid membership as my misguided friend suggested it was only relevant to US members. I shall however, look into and rectify this in the immediate future and remove the freeloading stigma.

Can I reiterate that any offense on my part was entirely unintended. However, somewhere deep down inside, I much prefer the British subtle suggestion to the insane Diego full frontal attack!
Well played, sir.

My cup runneth over!

Guess it's time for my epilogue. The response to this thread has resulted in a positive outcome. I wish my car were as submissive as I am. And thanks for all the supportive advice.

Moral to the story: Think like a woman and always read the instruction manual!!!

Hey, good thread.

IIRC, SeanR made a similar request a while back, as have others, to follow-up.

Its difficult sometimes because the cause/effect can get lost ---- sometimes you fix it and aren't sure how, and often there is a time lag of months (and you forget that you've posted on it at all).

Do consider that CD set --- it has wiring diagrams and a set of very special, well written Porsche-to-mechanic documents that really support DIYing the cars. I learned to read the wiring diagrams and it has literally faciliated ownership of these old cars.

Fonetico started a different thread and posted this SOLUTION in it. He linked to this thread but didn't post his SOLUTION here. Go figure. So ... hope this is useful:
Post Epilogue (with apologies to Randy).

To lead by example, here's my contribution. In fact, I've had any number of requests for details if I ever solve the issue of the blackout in the central console and pod switches. Why did it persist in blowing the relevant fuse and toasting the dimmer rheostat?

I cobbled together the gadget Wally suggested and went to work. Working literally in the dark was a challenge and I never managed to shed any light on where the short was. Let's face it, you really need a PhD in Astro Physics to follow a Porsche wiring diagram! In despair, I handed it over to the local Porsche expert who kept the car for two weeks than gave it back with no dash or console lighting, no headlights and no turn indicators.

Little choice but to make the pilgrimage to the British guru on all things 928. 250 miles there and back to see Paul Anderson in Stroud.

Problem solved!

Apparently the illumination circuit includes a wire the goes under the seats to the seat position memory. I'd recently had some repairs to the driver's seat. It seems that the connecting multi pin plug under the seat had been damaged when the seat was removed and then taped together with several pins shorting. Replacing the plug fixed the problem.

Maybe one of the learned electrical experts (Alan?) could provide a more scientific explanation. But at least I can see the clock, HVAC control and pod switches now.

Hope this is useful.
