Started my 86.5 928S the other day and it _____________________________. It _______________________ when I tried driving it and it really did not improve once warmed up. Aaaargh!
Opened the hood and immediately noticed one of the eight rubber intake boots was ballooned up and found it was torn on the hidden underside.
Name the symptom(s) that caused me to have a look under the hood. Bonus points for relative severity of symptom(s). Extra bonus points for the more novice shade tree mechanics out there.
Have a nice day!

"backfired loudly" "misfired noticeably"
Now, you get to determine why it backfired...
One possibility is a sticking intake valve - if so, different oil, ore frequent changes, or getting the engine to run at the normal (hot) operating temperature.

Could not hold idle and died. It would idle with a little throttle encouragement but hunted like crazy. It bucked at lower rpms when I tried driving it. Died at every stop where I couldn't get my foot back to the throttle in time.
Solved with a little round hunk of rubber marketed as an "intake boot." Amazing what havoc a little unmetered air can produce.
Glen L and Richter12x2 are today's winners of Name That Symptom! Thank you for playing.
