Default 4.5L camshaft O ring questions

I got the passengers side cam shaft gears and cover plate off to address leaks. Looks like they have definitely been leaking.

I ordered seals from Roger but need to confirm that the round O ring I got according to the parts manual is the flatened looking seal I see on the inside of the cam shaft cover plate.

Parts manual shows item #10 as a large O ring. The picture of my camshaft plate shows a flatened rubber looking seal against the base of the plate. Are these the same thing? If so I can see why it was leaking. Can I cut the old one to remove?

There are 2 sizes of o-rings that were used for #10, not sure when the change was made. Measure the old one to verify. Sizes are 52x4 or 50x5.

The o-ring size question should only be there for early 78 cars. I'm sure for a 79 they sent you the right one. If the cam bearing really doesn't want to go back in, then look into it.

You should have no problem getting that old o-ring off. That looks like mine did, and it will probably just shatter when you try to pick it out. I agree it's hard to imagine that hard flattened plastic ring was once a rubber o-ring. I knew immediately why mine was pissing so much oil down the block at that point, too.

Thanks guys. Jim Doerr and Roger confirmed yesterday that the changeover happened mid 78 model group.

I got the assembly apart yesterday and although the front seal was in good shape the large and small orings were indeed rock hard and had to be chipped out. They are obviously originals.
