Thanks Mike!

I spoke to Ray yesterday about the fuel lines and Y-piece concerns - all items will be inspected and replaced if needed, he is about to start MMs, OPG, steering rack bushings on my car anyway.

Before I bought this car, I shopped for a year, and saved up double the purchase price. No expense will be spared in eliminating all deferred maintenance and making sure she will be a safe reliable shark for years to come! Plus, Ray Munsch is a top 928 guy and treats all his client's cars like his kids (he has about 40 clients who own about 50 sharks!)

Thanks for all the tips! I can't wait to move back to NC so I can start getting my hands dirty!

Not my idea of vacation and certainly took me longer than a week on a part time basis. Being remote, you could to it in phases. Easiest piece is probably the console side panels, then maybe the door panels, or seat backs.

The main floor pan area for me was a lot more than R&R seats and carpets. Lots of deteriorated foam, striped seat bolt heads, broken trim pieces, etc. Save that for when you'll have more time to do it right.

After all said and done, I still have that old crayon smell I've kind of grown to love.

On a different not, by far my favorite air freshener is Ozuim.

Open door spray a few seconds here and there. Shut doors and let sit. Air out 20 minutes later and it will smell just like a new car. Repeat if necessary.

Also, I'm not a big fan of steam cleaning unless you like the lumpy poodle dog look. I prefer the "dry" chem types that you spay and blot. Something like this:
Amazon Amazon

Hope you enjoy your vacation and Shark on down the road!

Yes! Crayon smell, that is exactly it! Oh well, I was hoping new carpet and padding would take care of it, but if not, at least it will be a good project.

I've lived in the city for too long, changing out the carpet in a 928 sounds like paradise to me LOL.

Definitely will not attempt while on vacation. I will just put in the manual sport driver's seat and then enjoy the beach, my baby girl and wife!

I used to have Alfas and BMWs years ago and I really miss the projects that went along with owning nice cars.

South of Chapel Hill or Pittsboro (?) Not exactly sure yet, but in the Orange/Chatham/Wake County vicinity.

I'm a UNC-CH alum and my wife is from Chapel Hill.

The stain stuff Kurt posted works. The key with any cleaner/steamer/chemdry etc. is making sure what goes in, comes out or you will get the lumpy poodle! Ozium works well but I find it is limited. The chem/steam cleaners can take out smell if it's not in the padding-and even then-it can.

A lot of the bad smell comes from the padding under the carpet. If you want to do the job right you need to pull the smelly insulation and replace it with some dynamat and close celled foam. You might have to build things up a little with the foam to get a good fit.

To get more head room you can move the seat back a notch. There is a plug in the last bolt hole behind the seat. Surprisingly this gives a lot more head room.

I think Rob Budd sells padding replacements as well; but definitely combine this with Closed Cell foam and some sound deadener.

One of our local members swears by this site (no outside interest): http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/

If you go through the trouble to replace the interior, read up on all the sound deadening info here in the forum.

I did buy the padding from Classic9 but it sounds like a great idea to add a layer of dynamat (pardon the pun...too much coffee this morning!)

Thanks so MUCH for all the advice...I'm chomping at the bit wish I could start this project today!

Also have staggered phone dials to refinish this fall and hopefully a new stereo head unit w/ small sub too.

Thing is, I love to drive the car so much it's hard to park it long enough to start taking stuff apart!!!!!

I thought replacing the carpet would make mine smell better--but to be honest, it really didn't have that big of an effect. It did however smell a LOT better after replacing the seat leather and foam padding under it. But I'm not quite to the "new car smell" yet.

Seat recovering/padding is on deck as well. Gonna drop in manual sport seats and then send my comfort seats off to Classic9 this fall.

Just about the time I finish this stuff, I bet the dash will start to crack.

Default source of weird smell found!

just a quick followup....

as a few here said, the smell was not the old carpet...most of the weird crayon-like smell seems to be coming in through the floor pan holes. They were not plugged. I plugged them and put the new carpet down. The smell is almost gone now and cabin is much more quiet!

I also confirmed good condition of y-pipe and all-new fuel lines. She's driving like a dream.

David,

Can't wait to see the carpet install and I used extra, extra, extra glue in attempt to get that new car smell..... Nothing but HATE in the future for the fool that tries to rip this carpet out!
