Anyone have a phone # for Master Tech Steve Cattaneo? (Transmission Specialist)
I was surprised to find out he has a transmission shop about a half an hour away from me and everyone here speaks very highly of his expertise. I need help fine tuning my shift points/kickdown etc...
I tried calling the number to his shop (Master Tech Transmissions) and it is no longer in service. The number I have is 845- 567- 0312

I have the address, but don't want to make the trip out there unless I know he is there...
I PM'd him as it shows he was on here just a few weeks ago. Hopefully he will get back to me. I wouldn't even mind bringing it to his residence if he would prefer...

Had the absolute pleasure of speaking to Steve yesterday afternoon. What a gentleman!!! He pinpointed the problem right over the phone and felt it was the kickdown switch under the gas pedal. Turns out, even though by hand I could feel and hear the switch working, the pedal was not reaching the switch. I adjusted the pedal and now it makes contact!!! Can't wait to rip this thing sideways once I get my new LH module in a few days!
Once I get the LH, we are going to speak again and Steve said he would walk me through what needs to be done to make the car shift properly. This guy is such a true talent. He needs to come back to serve the automotive public !

You would be doing some of us a favor if, as you speak with him, you mention that there was just another thread with discussion of S3 cars starting in second...perhasp he has the bead on the most likely fault/misadjustment.....beyond bowden cable...

Give me the specifics. I will mention it to him this week and see if I can get you an answer.

Not to hijack...in response though, the most recent thread is here though there were others in the past:

Basically, the thinking has been that the S4s have the second-gear-start, and that prior to that they should start (rolling from a standstill) in first gear. Many, or at least some 85/86 (and earlier) function that way. Some, however, report starting in second gear- and these aren't end of the model year cars.

Perhaps Steve needs to start an on-line consultant service for 928 transmission problems. Send him $10 by Paypal and get fifteen minutes of phone consultation...

I asked him about your question and according to him, only the Euro cars took off in first gear. Didn't matter what year it was. Hope this helps...

Re: Trans, Thank you very much for checking!
But I don't buy it. Too much anecdotal info to the contrary.
I also just picked up/read through Porsche publication on the A28, published 9/85, that states in no less than four different places that the four speed transmissions 'always move off in first gear'.
Whether I put more confidence in anecdotal, or the Porsche documentation is still an open question...but this time they agree in one respect- the S3 second gear starts are anomolous and something is probably up. Given the commonness, I"m surprised we haven't drilled down to what the most likely culprits are.

I had my transmission rebuilt by "this expert." Perhaps he WAS one, once, but it appears that he just put in a used transmission, and charged me for "rebuilding" it. When it failed, I had my car towed there, some 160 miles away, and was very irritated by what he had said. (I had realized that it seems that he just put a used one in AFTER the car was back at his place, and he tried to explain how he dusted my transmission with red paint "to protect it from corrosion.")
There has been another complaint about him on this forum, but it seems that the powers that be like him as well, and moved the post.
I have photographs of the Master tech "rebuilt" transmission and will evaluate my options once the car is done. It's being "rebuilt" again, this time by people who actually dismantle it and replace worn parts, etc.
Is there ANY REASON that he had provided me with a used looking transmission, sprayed poorly with red spray paint? How about how a transmission oil cooler hose leaked, months after this gentleman's "rebuild?" Can any supporter of his explain how, if he's so dam good, how my transmission developed a leak in it's front seal within a few months of use???
Any "good explanation" on how his telephone lines got disconnected during my cars time there?
How he "didn't remember" working on my pristine, white S4, just months earlier???
All the time that passed without response from him while it was there???
The bottom line is that I had my car taken to this guy and stayed out of the process. I was patient, didn't ever question anything and TRUSTED HIM. My car has been off the road for another YEAR, because of this gentleman, and his BS!
More to come. I was at the shop yesterday and have had the shop manager photograph the transmission. For now, I just want my car back, repaired, and ready for the, ugh, fall...
