Most of the discussion on oil consumption seems to be with regards to the GTS models. What is the situation with the S4 models?

Thanks,

Murray

The S4 pistons have drain holes behind the oil scraper rings and the GTS pistons don't.

Over time the ingested oil tends to gunk-up the scraper rings (all stock S4 and GTS by design ingest oil into the TB).

With the piston drain holes the S4 is less prone to have piston rings that get stuck in their groves.

Thanks Herman. I drive my S4 pretty hard and have not noticed any measurable oil consumption. Is there any benefit to modifying the oil breather set up for this model?

Nothing wrong with driving them hard I do as well.

If you don't have measurable oil consumption than I recommend you stay with what you have in place for now.

Set your self a base line by doing a compression check and leak down test now in addition ones a year remove your air filter box and MAF manually open the throttle body valve and look inside the TB for oil (or use a swab like the ones used for gun barrel cleaning on a flexible claw pick tool) and slide it around in the TB.

If you come up dry your OK and if not plan to install an oil separator to avoid future any ill effects from oil ingestion down the road.

For pictures on the subject look at the PDF files in this thread - GTS oil in-intake reducing system road tested over 3000 plus miles -
