Sorry to hear of this. Seems if you have much more than a dent on a 928 the ins. cos wanna total em. I like the advice of assessing the damage & fixing it yourself if you can. Especially if the car is a keeper.

i think the car is only a write off if it goes through your insurance.doesnt look too bad to me.mostly vac hoses and probably plug wires which are worth renewing anyway!i think the gentleman with the extinguisher may have caught this one in time.

the early cars have two rubber fuel lines high pressure feed and lower pressure return unused fuel is plumbed back into the tank is like a garden hose with no nozzle. The feed line from pump to fuel dist or press reg see LOTS of pressure and when it leak it really leaks. Sprays on the exhaust manifold and gasoline ignites around 450 F or when it sees an errant spark from bad plug leads. Those two hoses also get worked as the engine which is rubber mount moves around while the metal hard lines are clamped to the chassis. The USA 80-84 cars ahve rubber hoses to each of the injectors and they too fail.

Don't mind this guy, he never has an encouraging word.
Good luck on the rebuild.
Who is your insurance carrier? That will make a big difference.
You say the exterior looks unharmed - look closer - guaranteed the paint has been affected in several areas, especially the hood.

I would claim it -- if they write it off -- ask them how much to buy it back.
Use the funds to restore it.
All depends on the $$ of course.

Look at the picture, there is still what appears to be red paint on the injector lines/caps,
Airbox isnt melted,
the rubber/steel clamp holding the AC bypass valve on the engine brace is unmelted, as well the brace still has paint on it.
The damage is little. Forget about claiming it. Just fix it and move on!

I would imagine that that stopping the claim would be as simple as a phone call but whatever you do DON'T drop the insurance or let it lapse and as far as the dry chem goes I doubt you'll have a problem with it since you had your filter in UNLESS there are holes melted in the bottom of the air box which may have allowed some to get sucked into the combustion chambers ,if so, you may be screwed and will be looking at a minimum of an engine rebuild if you do start working on her wash all that crap off the engine before you do anything else and replace the air filter just to be safe. I once saw a guy have a backfire through the carb on his pickup that he was afraid to blow out or spray with water so he shot an extinguisher right down the throat of his carb then immediately began trying to start the truck again I looked at the guy and said "that isn't gonna work man" and he didn't reply so i made it a point to stop him and say "you just shot a jet of flame retardant powder down there where you're now trying to get fire it isn't starting again as long as that stuff is in there!' he didn't believe me but three days later I overheard him telling somebody how his truck caught fire and the damage was so bad he had to junk it

I will try to get some pictures to morrow and post them. The car was turned off as soon as I could after smelling the gas. It was definitely off before the vapors ignited and before the extinguisher was used.

I read that , I was just stating that the powder can STILL end up in the engine if proper care isn't taken. It'd be a real shame to be as lucky as he appears to have been , then still end up effectively killing the engine!

I didn't think about the possibility of them totaling the car for this fire, but yes, it is a distinct possibility. From the outside, there is no sign of any damage, and the inside looks more smoke and dry-chem discolored.
Is it possible to cancel claim once it has been called in?

Either way, sorry about your loss and glad you made it out ok. I debated changing the lines on my '82 as it only had 45K miles and the outside of the hoses showed no signs of wear or checking. After reading a few horror stories I went ahead and bought the line kit from Roger. Glad I did...after cutting the hoses apart I noticed the insides were severely cracked.

I have a buddy with a '99 vette...he owed 7k$ on it...wrecked it, 17k$ in damage, insurance had a shop fix it. He got it back, was not happy with the repairs, took it to a different shop, they found more problems, insurance totaled it. Gave him $ 23k for it. He bought it back for $7k (he had 4k$ in race motor), paid the 7k$ he owed, had it fixed for 3k$, pocketed 6k$, and had a better vette than what he started with....only drawback is a salvage title, but he plans on keeping it forever, and does not care about the title....
I have driven it...quite nice....I consider his deal a win..
