I imagine the switch is as simple as a slider on an exposed wiper contact. You could probably try cleaning the wiper and slider. You could always buy a two dollar potentiometer to wire up instead of an OEM switch.
*edit - You can try to clean it, but it may be harder cleaning that spring off. Have you checked to see if any solder joints were broken?
I have had my 86 since 2009 dash lights always had a short. I just found this thread tonight. My dimmer was green with tarnish. I cleaned it up with copper pot polish and white vinegar and a plastic brush. After I cleaned it I sprayed it with battery terminal anti corrosive spray and plugged it back in. The lights are now as bright as they were with the fused plugged into as suggested in the thread as a test. Thank you all for this thread I was debating replacing the entire instrument cluster when it was just a dirty dimmer. These cars keep you on your toes and I have not had any success with mechanics.
