No duke's of hazard event here. No way! I did see that video of that poor red 928 beat up by some rednecks.

As for my car, I hit a pothole. NYC is probably the worst place for a 928. US capital of potholes and endless stop n go traffic. If I had driven my daily workhorse, it prob would not have been an issue. What can I say, weekend's are for 928 motoring.

The alternator fan or pulley is scraping. I think the housing or cover is damaged as well. I'm going to dig into it late on fri after work and let you guys know. Seems like I may be in for a complete set of shocks and springs too as car is lower than it should be. Problem might have been avoided if shocks were good.

So the project priority list has changed and grown. My girlfriend told me the other day that I spend far more time and money on my wife (my 928) than her. Oopsie! I'm sure nobody else's s.o can relate to mine.

Your car has adjustable front spring perches so you could simply adjust the ride height. Carl at 928 msports sells some plates to bolt to the front suspension mounts which act as skid rails to help protect the pan, A/C and Alternator.

The factory plastic spoiler & composite belly pan were Porsche's idea of 'sufficient protection' from oil pan damage... if they had only added a steel skid plate to the lower radiator frame!

The Ss only have a small aluminium pan that barely covers half the alternator. The pan bend really easily and on most cars, it's torn up pretty good from normal use.

Hmm, I keep thinking of those Skid Plates. (the ones sold by one of the vendors). Being in DC I've learned the art of the swerve, (staying within the lane). Wheel placement is everything , an inch to the left or right of a pot hole can be the difference between the wheel dropping in the hole or 'skirting' the edge. My biggest fear lately is not potholes, but the buckled pavement where you have a big turtle hump in the middle of the lane. I think this is caused by bus and mass transit traffic but I'm always afraid of a oil pan/motor. A skidplate for 's3' and OB's would be awesome ..

In any case, your damage seems isolated to the alternator. If it was my car, I would just get another alternator and rebuild/install or go with a delco upgrade.
