I thought it was the exhaust ( sounds like it) but it is not. All the exhaust is tight. The starter seems to be the source. the starter works fine...no issues but does this sound right? There seems to be a very little play in the Bendix and I can turn it with very little effort with my fingers. ( not sure if thats normal as this is the first time I have had the starter off. )
Thoughts please as this sounds terrible.

It sounds like somebody is hitting it with a hammer...
I've got my 80 on jack stands outside right now. I'll go out in the morning and tap the starter to see if I get that metallic rattle and let you know.

Put pressure sideways against the Bendix and the rattle goes away. Bearings must be worn.
Has anyone tried the Duralast rebuilt starter from Auto Zone? Lifetime warranty for $80 and some change.

I have never bought a reman 928 starter from Autozone but put plenty of their reman parts in my kid's cars over the years. Don't recall ever having a problem. It's a starter, not a flux capacitor.
BTW, Marvin looks fabulous.![bowdown](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/bowdown.gif)
