Default Clear Bra questions (searched)

Surprisingly not many photos of 928 clear bra installations. I've searched but found little.

1: my car was re-painted, paint was sprayed about May 3. So I'm just over the 30 day mark. I have read some reccomrnded 90? My car is going in on Wednesday to have the 3m film installed. Any reccomendation on curing time, is 30 days enough? The car has been indoors for most of the 30 days at or above room temperature.

2: I have little confidence in the re-paint, especially the bumper. On one hand the film will help the bumper from pealing or cracking (already a few cracks in the paint). So the film when removed will most likely pull the bumper paint with it. See pic of bumper corner.

3: Any pictures out there, specifically the area arround the headlights.

What does the painter say about your appears-to-be-failing paint?

That paint may be too rough for a clear bra to properly adhere. You may also want to ask your body shop how long to wait for proper curing. For reference I have also heard that 90 days is needed for proper curing.

As far as the body shop goes they are never touching my car again (long story). The rest of the paint is very good. I would say 8.5 out of 10. It is very smooth.

Im concerned After reading many sources saying 90 days as well. When in the garage the car still has an odor, possible evidence of continuing off gassing?

You're best to wail until the odor goes away. If you want to speed to process along, park it out in the sun for a few days.

What did the body shop do to your car? Why does it look like they used single stage metallic paint?

It's two stage, just a crappy low light picture from my iPhone.

The body shop: the painter was really good, but the disassembly & re-assembly was a joke. In short I had to be on them every freaking day to make sure it was stripped properly and that they were following my initial requirements. They obviously dont do many full re-paints. Anyone can't paint panels, sadly that's probably what they do best. They lost many screws and nuts, put a small mark in one of my rear seats. I ended up taking the car with no headlights, wipers etc cause I was fed up.

From what I have found Ventureshield seems to be the best, better than 3m.

Apparently the Ventureshield is breathable so less risky on fresh paint. Also I hear it tends to have less orange peel especially when stretched.

So I'm thinking since my paint is new and the area arround the headlights will involve considerable stretching, that I'm better off canceling my appointment on Wednesday for the 3m film. And get the Ventureshield installed by pure auto.ca or advanced mobile group. They both come highly recommended and use Ventureshield.

But I did get a good deal at the 3m shop. So if anyone has had experience with the headlight area and stretching with 3m let me know. On the flip side I'm definatly more concerned with the end product over price.

Hey Steve, who is Jim? On the forum or at a local shop?

I just had clear bra installed on my 08'Cayman by "Premier Protective Films" in Fremont CA - Real high end place - actually did a really nice install. I was told that any paint other than factory original would not survive the material being removed.

No it likely won't as only factory finishes are baked on at high temps. Re-paints are only baked at 150.

My only worry is if it does not turn out well I'm screwed, since taking it off will likely not be an option or at least a very risky one.

Any ways I think I have to cancel my appointment anyway, my car is still on jack stands waiting for caliper retaining springs. At least that gives me more time to decide what to do.

I talked to a Ventureshield installer today, he was very helpful. He also is highly recommended by several Canadian renlisters. So I'm pretty sure if I do it, I will go with him.

Why not just leave it as is and have it painted every 3-5 years. The clear bra will not last that long anyway.

I'm seriously considering that. It's not a DD, and I can get a bra for long road trips.

I agree that in this instance a clear bra may be more detrimental, maybe best to pick up a regular bra and use that when taking the car on the highway and on trips.
