Order of operations
I am starting on my overdue maintenance item list and would like input on the order to take stuff apart. I am doing pan gasket, motor mounts and TB jobs. With some other wyait stuff.
Any thoughts on the most efficient way to do all three jobs..?
Thx

I would do the TB first. There can be a lot of cleaning necessary to the front of the engine. The debris falls onto the front of the oil pan. It's easy to wipe off but I would rather not have the cleaners run down over front edge of the new pan gasket. Just a preference.
The pan gasket is a WYAIT to the motor mount job. I found it helpful to raise the engine as far as possible when doing the motor mount job. This made getting the cross member back in with the new higher mounts much easier. I also took the time to install a new oil pickup tube seal while the pan was off.

Some of the WYAITs will depend on what you might see once you have the covers open and oil pan open.
How many miles, year? Check the bearings once the pan is open. Check all critical lines.

I would look closely at the steering rack and ps system. Hoses, boots, tierod ends, rack bushes, system flush. Good wyait for both mm/opg and tb/wp.
Good wyait for tb is oil pump rebuild. Also check you oil cooler hoses. Also oil filler neck seal, water bridge seals, and tstat.

Powers steering rack was rebuilt just before I bought it, other stuff I will look at as I go. I want to do the fuel lines for sure. I am not sure how much I want to bite off the first time I start tearing it down. I miss driving it too much!!!!

What he said.
Trans mounts are currently only available from Porshe, (read not cheap) but make a real difference, and are one of the easier jobs on these cars.
If you have a lift, a trans jack is a real benefit when doing the MM and Trans. Just makes it much easier. Princess Auto has the trans jacks available for under $200 Cdn., IIRC.
Also, don't forget to pull the air filter housing before starting and really be careful with the MAF clearance to the firewall when lifting from below.
If you've access to a steam cleaner (Automotive) now would be a great time to give it a workout from underneath, and you may want to consider your tensioner options while you're doing the TB.

Thanks Rob, I have dome some minor stuff, cv boots, master cyl, door locks etc., but this is my first real tear down since I bought the car. My car seems to have been fairly well maintained, just some of the usual items. I have no service history hence the TB job. Belt looks new but I am replacing it anyway. MM are shot, I will look at the tranny while I am there.
