Oven cleaner is powerful stuff on aluminum, i used it to remove anodizing on my bike rims a couple years ago. It left a tarnished finish though, which took alot of gradual sanding to bring it back to polish. I didn't know 928's had cosmoline applied to them, what years? My 87 S4 seems to just have the really thick black undercoating that holds up well and looks ok. Cosmoline is that waxy yellowish stuff right? I read up that they started dip galvanizing 911 body's starting with MY 75, no idea re: 928's though.
Have you tried the heavy duty Simple "Green" that is purple? I got a jug of it at Crappy Tire and haven't used it on anything yet but give it a shot.

Your S4 should not be covered with Black Undercoating. The factory under coating is like rubber and light grey. When body shops get hold of cars they often spray tar undercoating to cover things up. The tar under coating is probably the worst thing that can be applied to a car. It traps water. Eastwood makes a uncoat removed that works on the tar stuff but does not remove the factory coat. It is a bit labor intensive to use but does work.
The light grey factory under coat is often painted over at the factory with the car color. To see the raw material you might have to look under the center of the car.
Unless your car has been cleaned up you should be able see some dirty yellow cosmoline on the aluminum cross member and front suspension parts.
