That totally sucks.

An oil and coolant leak at the same time?

Weird.

Brett,
Your 88 should be similar to my 87 and most of the oil related stuff is on the drivers side, power steering, oil cooler hoses. I have had 2 PS hoses go, and one oil cooler hose, but nothing but oily mess. Something must be spraying oil on that side. Could possibly be cam cover caps leaking.
Glad you are OK.
Was the radiator end cap passenger side? No cooler there on our cars as far as I know.

glad you caught it in time.i wonder if the rad leak started the problem then when the engine got so hot from the lack of coolant it combusted oil near the hot manifold?

I'd bet you had a headgasket let go, lost a bunch of coolant, got really hot, and then oil leaked out between the block and head. Sorry to hear she's sick.

I am certain the coolant loss/overheating was the impetus

If a head gasket came apart, that could expose the oil drains at the outside of the block I suppose.

Check trans cooler lines. There are some on the passenger side that get close to the exhaust.
