I just received my new G28/11 transmission from Hawaii. Inspecting things I pulled the top cover and checked all the teeth and such. The only questionable was the shift fork alignment. I should probably check the other one I have to see if it is the same, but I thought I'd ask first.
There are three positions of the shift rod. First and reverse is on the same plane as fourth and fifth. However then I try to engage second and third there is a little notch in the movement. It appears the selector is hitting a little on the second and third fork rod. The alignment of the slot is not perfect. it is easy to just slide the selector back just a little and then it engages the shift bar and forks.
Should the slots be evenly aligned? The owner said the trans had a little notch in shifting? It would seem things would be better it these fork rods were evenly aligned.
I also noticed on the other 85 trans I have that the reverse lock out spring was broken. Greg had the same problem with his trans. Is this an item that should be replaced when ever the transmission is out. In the case of Greg's transmission it broke off and chipped a couple of teeth.
Thanks for any input on this. I am not even sure the shift rod can be adjusted as I thought it was locked with a pin.

if the trans you have has ever been opened IE taken apart there is a good chance one of the detent lockout ***** has fallen out during reassembly
If you can get your hands on a transmission manual you can see where these lockout sliders go, if one is missing then the shaft wont be held in a positive locked out position thus it would be able to engage 2 gears at one time thus locking up the transmission.
The bad part about this is it will take removal of the 3 selector rods to determine the parts are in there.
There are also holes on the outsides of the trans that hold springs and lockout *****, maybe you get lucky and remove these first to determine if a spring or ball is missing without shaft removal

Thanks, I tried reading the manual and it is not very complete. The only seems off is the alignment of the gear set selection rod. I can see how loosening the gear forks that this can be adjusted out. It does seem to have the detents where they should be.

well see if you select one gear then try to move the the other two shafts if either one also moves than the lockout is to blame
I thought that the shift forks were all roll pinned into place,
posting A picture would be helpful

No the shift forks on the gears are supposed to be bolts and are ajustable.
The trans is put a way for now. But I will get some pictures in a while. Thanks
