Default Motor Mounts - which type?

Hi all,

I found a lot of useful info here regarding the motor mounts and it is looking like I am going to have to do mine. During my search I found a lot of different info as far as which type. The ones from Ford, Volvo, 928 Motorsports etc etc.??

My question is which ones do I go with? Are there certain types that I want to stay away from? I notice the pricing is all over the place too. Any advice for a newbie? This is for a 1987 S4 Auto.

Also, I have an appointment at a Pcar shop next week for the rear CV boot, I just don't have the time to do it myself. Should I have them do the motor mounts while it's there? Any idea what that job would run? If the price is too crazy I'll just have to wait until I have time to do it myself and follow the procedure outlined by Pirtle but I still need to know which type to buy.

Thank you in advance for the input!

Apart from solid metal there are three choices.
Porsche hydraulic circa $250 each
Anchor Solid Rubber
Volvo Hydraulic circa $50 each.

We will no longer sell the solid rubber anchor MM's after all the failures with collapsed MM's

Probably a 10 to 12 hour job for Porsche and maybe more so at $100 to $125 an hour you can do the math. They will probably insist on using Porsche MM;s as well

Thanks for the response guys. Roger, that's some ugly looking math! Looks like I'll have to set a weekend aside

How long have you had the Volvo one on, Ducman?

I have had the Volvo on several of my cars 87, 88, 89, 93. The 87-89 have been on for two years now. The 88 I drove to Alaska two years ago, and made it with flying colors on stretches of roads the had frost heaves. 4,000 mile trip from DFW Texas, to Anchorage. I recommend these, and I had help installing them from Roger, and Sean R. Thanks to both!

Volvo seems to be the consensus on the best choice. It was the single best thing I have done to the car to greatly improve driver feel.

The Volvo mounts are the cheapest choice any way.

Thanks, I'm going to order the Volvo ones this week, especially with a test trip to Alaska! Sounds like an awesome road trip!

One more photoessay/write up on the install wouldn't hurt, depending on model year! I think Pirtles is the authoritative for S4s. Don't recall whether Dwayne did one for S3.

I just did my MM on MY '85 with the Volvo Mounts. A few things that I learned was,

1. The Volvo mounts are taller than the factory Porsche mounts.
2. This raised the X-brace which caused the test port for the TPS to need to be repositioned.
3. The " hooks" on the bottom of the mounts/ X member rubbed which will cause a vibration when installed.
4. I test fitted the Volvo mounts on the X brace before installing them and bent them apart so that they would not rub.

Mr Merlin did a great write up on the Volvo mounts for MY '85
