He's right. When I read "shift linkage needs replacing" I hear in my head;

"I know nothing about 928's whatsoever especially what makes an automatic transmission work so I will blame my transmission not going into gear on the shifter cable because I know it connects to the actual transmission"......

Be patient and find a car you can test drive......

My question - How diffiult of a job is it to change the shift cable on an automatic? There is one for sale on c-list that is not far from me, but they claim it needs a new shift cable and the guys mechanic can't do it.

Thanks in advance for the info. I hope to become an owner sooner, rather than later.
You get props for coming here BEFORE buying one, unlike some of the other sad stories that show up here AFTER buying one.

Pay for a detailed PPI by a Porsche mechanic that knows 928s (not just any mechanic - get a recommendation here) and use that to negotiate a better selling price.

Good luck with your search!

+++928. The best investment you can make is time - read this forum for 3-6 months. You WILL get a better car and better value as a wiser consumer.

And the $20 to be a member would also be well spent.

You're going to spend thou$and$ anyway, what's a double sawbuck? Even if you end up buying a (shudder) Corvette or a (shudder, shudder) BMW or a (crosses himself) Jaguar.

You are smart for coming here first. You just saved big dollars and you dont even know it yet. PPI is crucial.
