Default Gears on speedometer??

Just realized that my odometer is not working ('87 S4). Saw something else on another site about gears on the speedometer. Can someone elaborate.

Also, while it is out, I'd like to fix a "sticking" problem; i.e. when leaving from a stop the speedometer needle does not move unless I slap the pod; doesn't have to be hard, just a tap. Years ago I sent the speedometer to Hollywood and they could not find anything wrong. I suspect I may have mounted the unit too tight or too loose. Appreciate any help.

Also, I believe that Dwayne had an excellent write up on how to do this. Pay attention to the the addendum regarding adding in the washer before you button it back up too. I went thru the trouble of pulling the pod to fix the gear only to find out the my repair didn't take:\ you may also want to change out the diaphrams in some of the vacuum actuators while you have everything apart, if I remember correctly having the pod out while doing this makes the job a lot easier. (Just looked & saw that you've been here since '05 so you probably know all this).
