Default IOR 50 goes to NZ (drnick)

Obscure title i know but it does have some 928 content.

One of our own drnick (wkd928 on Sailing Anarchy) is about to set out from the US to sail his 50footer back to NZ. There's a thread started on Cruising Anarchy
http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/ind...owtopic=133675
that will no doubt detail his exploits and some earlier stuff linked to from there - links reproduced below. The mighty AO and his supercharged 928 gets a mention.

I wish him fair seas and following winds in his journey (apart from the fact that he is sailing a 1980s icon like the 928 which would do better with upwind all the way back to NZ)

Jon,

You will be surprised how bening she is on a reach... A real pleasure to helm, tanking along at around 9knots on a beam reach in about 17knots true. No idea what she is like downwind... I suppose trully horrible, which is quite the opposite of my racer, but then again I tend to go sideways rather than upwind on a big wind day unless I have 8 people on the rail...

Wow! That's quite a trip in a IOR 50 racing boat. I could not find any pics of drnick's vessel. Not a member of Facebook with no plans of being one.

I bought my Tartan 4600 from the great lakes as well before bringing her to San Francisco Bay. As they have to haul there boats and recommission every year you find them to be in excellent maintained condition. Of course being in fresh water pays big dividends as well. Sweet Tart has moved on to another owner. She will be one of the Marshall boats for the America's Cup. She is now berthed in the San Francisco Yacht Club. Not much opportunity to sail when you live in the desert

Fair winds to all involved. Would have been fun to crew.

Sadly, this was not the case. Allegiance, ex Windquest (built by the De Vos family) was in a pretty dreadful state when Nick bought her. Ok to faff around in the Great Lakes, but simply dangerous on the open seas. Having slaved on her for 7 days I can testify that she was the equivalent of a barely running 79 OB with cracked dash, smokey rings and Ling Long tyres on the Boxster wheels that someone had fitted in an attempt to breathe some life into it...

Now, it is a different story, after stupid amounts of money went in... Just like all sailboats

Neglect offers no advantage to any boat owner that is for sure. My Tartan was originally commissioned as a blue water racer cruiser (sloop). She has a stepped 76' (23 m) mast and I had her rigged as a cutter not long before I sold her. With a draft of near 8' (2.44m) she was not meant for leisurely shallow water lagoons. Original plans were for the wife and I to circumnavigate from Hawaii.... an unexpected surprise changed all that (another daughter). Got into 928's as another form of spending money.

BMW is the German acronym for "Pretend Sports Car" - just ask my kids.

Strangely, in some bizarre warping of the space-time continuum, the accelerator pedal in my 928 is connected to the throttle in nearby BMWs.

If I push the pedal to accelerate, all the BMWs around go faster.

Good to see you guys still have a sense of humour although I notice Alex isn't biting(!) Just ask him about our unofficial drag race one time, mind you since then both cars have new engines - allegedly. The BM was making 480 na at the crank and driving it was compelling.. Having said that, Andrews supercharged GT is how all road going 928s should be IMO, monster torque, serious horsepower and a great suspension and chasis - and beautiful interior. One thing that I almost forget is the bank vault closure of the doors, mind you they sound a bit more clattery after you remove all the panels

Ok, I will bite... From memory, the 928 was pulling away from the Munich taxi... Granted the Munich Taxi was not as good as it is today, but lemme point you in the direction of my "Book of Racing Drivers' Excuses"... I think this one comes under Excuse N3... "Yeah, my ignition map was somewhat retarded..."

Well, i should have expected this kind of cheap shot now that the BM is on its way to NZ and there is no chance to vanquish any doubt in your mind about the outcome of our last meeting.. But then any kind of rematch that would also need the grey GT to actually start and run

She has pretty lines. Where is she now? What route will you be taking, I remember the west-east but nothing more than that.
