Default Steering Rack and Spool Valve

At long last, getting ready to take care of my old, leaky steering rack.

From '91 onward Porsche provided 'reduced effort' steering that I want to maintain. This has several parts: a higher pressure pump, different restrictors in the hoses and, I believe, a different spool valve in the steering rack. This rings true because I don't think any other component in the rack has much effect on steering effort. But, what I've read and heard is that no one knows - or can tell - if any given rack has the reduced effort spool valve or the pre-'91 type in it.

So my question is, can my original spool valve be removed and swapped into a generic rebuilt rack? If so, is this a complicated and delicate process or fairly simple?

So far, my theory has been to send my rack to a rebuilder who promises they'll rebuild and send back my unit. But, if the spool valve can be easily transferred to a generic rebuilt 'late' rack, then maybe that's another option to consider?
