Default MPG weirdness

Since my 88 doesn't have a MPG indicator, I have been manually calculating my MPG for the last year, I simply take the miles driven and divide it by how many gallons it takes to fill the tank back up.

Other than the tankfuls that have been used for long, highway driving, my MPG has been consistently 15.4-15.6. I do very little highway driving during the work week, so it's all stop and go city driving. This has been consistent for the entire year. Until last week.

Last week's MPG was calculated to be 16.5. This week it went up to 17.1. I have made no changes to the car mechanically, tire air pressure is checked every couple of days. I haven't changed fuel or octane rating. I don't drive differently. So, why, after 10-12 months of 15.5, is it increasing?

Maybe they just switched from winter to summer fuel?

Possibly. It's been very mild in Nashville, hardly a winter at all and has been 70-90 for a month now. I am not sure when they switch.
