Default Cam Gears - '86 32V Auto

This is for an '86 32V Auto.

My baby is still in the shop for the intake refresh among other things to replace from a 26 year old car that have worn out, and chances are likely I'll need to replace the cam gears with the timing belt and water pump.

I've read on other posts that the part is discontinued for the later years, seen on pelicanparts as 928 105 530 04 for almost $500 I can get a used on on 928intl for lesser though...

Are there any alternatives? I'm leaning towards a used one (hopefully still in supply) from 928intl, or hopefully mine isn't too worn out that it can still be salvaged.

dont go used .
Best option is New Porsche part.
Next option is aftermarket. 1 person supplies it. I recommend doing a search for Cam gears

I just read in another thread that they are available new. I would do considerable research before I bought other than Porsche. Search is your friend as it has been discussed here.

Yo Drcasta. How much longer is it to change out the cam gears while doing a TB/WP job?

Are those the adjustable ones? I saw one by BMW.

Easy to change and the stock ones are adjustable over a certain range. Use Porken's setup to dial things in. I do not believe anyone has come up with a viable aftermarket replacement.

At this point I'd install new porsche ones, eat the heavy cost but know I'd probably never replace them again. They'll probably ban gasoline first.

Just buy the new Porsche ones. They are around $410.00 ea and will last decades if the belt is done right.

Once you're in there for the TB its just an additional step, however I have never done it, (My gears were still coated and flat).

Do you know for sure you need new gears?

If your belt wasn't over-tensioned you may be ok. Inspect carefully unless you want to just replace them.

IF you are going to replace the cam gears you may want to also replace the Oil pump gear WYAAT(While you are at it) and the oil pump seal and front main seal. (I know, things add up).

Are you sure you need new gears ? Overly tight timing belts cause more wear than anything else. ALso when the car is running if you look in the inspection holes, is the belt tracking straight? Do you see any wobble or anything wierd at idle ?

#call me bro (or Roger).

BTW I would definitely buy them from Roger aka 928sRus.com if you decide to get new ones (and that may not be a bad idea, once they are replaced you will not have to do it again if you keep the belt adjust properly )

Thanks Hugh I can't say for sure the gears need replacement though I'm pretty sure the seals have to be renewed. The last time I did check the belt was last month and it was tracking straight. No wobble or anything so I'm guessing that's a good sign. If they're okay I'll keep up with regular maintenance so they don't wear out.

I'm definitely buying the WP and Gates belt from Roger amongst other things.

Well, they are a "wear item." I believe they are anodized, at least there is a coating which Porsche could have done better. Once the coating is gone, they get shiny, the metal is exposed and the teeth become dished. Once that happens, a sharp edge is usu created. Once that happens the belt is at risk. Once the belt . . .. If it's a garage queen, and gears are not shiny, you might get thousands more out of them, it's your call.

If you find your cam gears are worn and need to replace, you may as well replace the oil and crank gears. That puts your belt on all new gears and should extend the life of both belt and the new cam gears.
The other gears are much less than the cam gears.

Another "While You Are At It" project

+1 everything they said.
Ultimately you will not know until you actually put eyes (and straightedge) on the gears.
You want to inspect them for wear on the coating. Like Steve said, once the coating wears the material wears out fast. Also a straight edge on the gear 'teeth' will show any loss of material. If the teeth start to have shallow grooves, it can cause you to lose a belt tooth, and that's an expensive tragedy.

When are you planning to inspect?

Some time next week when I get time to stop by the shop to look at her. I'll check over the coating (or try to find images to accurately compare what I am seeing to what I should be seeing) and take pictures. I'll post them here when I get the chance.

Thanks guys! I'm so glad I joined.

Hey Avar,

Sounds like we are in the same process together. Going to vist my wrenches shop regarding T-belt/waterpump and anything else a 26yr old car needs. Going to check out cam gears too. If you haven't already, I posted a thread about $2k T-belt job. You might find some useful info there too.

Hey Benz,

Everyone can call me Mike instead of Avar

Yea, I've been tracking your thread since we're in the same boat. There's a couple of listers who live near me that have experience doing the TP/WP so I might call on them to tackle it since it's an expensive (but doable) job. I just need to take a closer peek at what may be encountered. The last thing I want is to gather 928ers to wrench in and find a bird's nest of disaster O.O I realized that much just with the intake.
