I can't aswer the question if the flywheel centres were hardenned or not. They were cast, that's all I can remember. But they are both holding with 150K Kms each so far. One is a TDI (90hp) and the other a 1.8T (180hp driven by my 65 YO father). So neither of them had a hard life. $600 was the complete conversion kit, not just the flywheel (flywheel, disk, pressure plate and bearings). I beleive the Flywheel is for a VR6 and the pressure plate is a G60.

Going to visit my shark today in the shop. I took a day off from work, to see if I can learn something new there. I will let you guys know what my ultimate cost comes out to plus any other necessary items "while he is in there".
Greg, Roger, and all you other guys, I'm so grateful for this forum and that so many of you 928 expert wreches and suppliers are actually on this forum too to give us your feedback and read into our problems/issues. The important thing I got out of this is knowing the quote was in line and learning about some of you wrenches elsewhere who also do thorough jobs. I love a mechanic who will honestly let me know what "needs" to be done and what "eventually" should be done in total and then prioritizes and packages the necessary work in stages. Everybody has budget limitations, but a good mechanic will be able to help a customer work in stages with some amount of time where the next stage needs to be addressed to be cost effective while making the car safe and roadworthy. I look at it as ongoing restoration while I can still drive it.
Don't know what you guys budget for maintenance, but I'm budgeting 2500 just for maintenance every year. I'm definitely going to be spending more than that this year as I bring the car up to par - hopefully not too much more, but after that I figure it should be plenty. Anything I have extra from yr to yr can go to upgrades or a supercharger some day. Does that sound reasonable?
It's also nice to know, that if I ever get around to that cross-country trip, I'll know who to see for problems, be it in TX, CA, or wherever else.

Ed,
I was at SM yesterday getting my yearly inspection sticker, saw a few 928s there. I think I saw one that fits your description - is it still at the shop? Looked really sharp!

Yep my car is still there. It would have had the 17' techno twist rims on it. I think mine's is one of 3 that are currently there. Hopefully will get it back before end of the week or early next week.
