'Quirky' Speedometer Issue
Just took it out from winter hibernation. Have had this issue for 2 years. When outside temperature is 50, or below, I have to drive a specific distance for the speedo to function. When it's cool out, speedo on 0 until I drive between 22 - 28 mile for it to 'kick in'. This distance is reproducible and consistent for the last 2 years (happens on different routes/different bumps). When I get to the distance the needle swings up to perpendicular, then assumes the speed. In summer, never happens unless it is a cool night when I start up in the AM. Today was a little different, hence the post. Drove the 20+ miles - speedo 'kicked in' - then died again. I was adjusting radio volume at the moment (so my hand was in the vicinity), so I said sh*t and hit the side of the pod, and bingo it kicked in.
I haven't pulled the pod or the sensor on the rear member. I have checked (and cleaned) the connections in spare area. Because the speedo would reliably function after the 20+ miles, I didn't feel to dig in. Now it occurred at a random time, so is it pod/dash removal dissection time for repair ? Or, do I go elsewhere ?
Thanks in Advance

Problem is typical. Usually the long pin connections on the speedo or the connection at the back.
Because it seems to come back with a smack, I'd lean towards speedo.

I agree that it is the connectors on the circit board on the back of the cluster. You can resolder the connections to fix the issue. There are 3 rivits, I soldered both sides, that connect the printed circit board to the long pins that go into the speedo. You may have to solder the pins also. I used a multimeter to test continuity between the rivits and the pins. Was a good idea because I didn't get it the first time. Finally with a little patience, I fixed the problem and the speedo works great now all the time. You may as well go ahead and replace the odo gear at the same time if you haven't replaced it yet. There are a couple of good writeups on how to do it and if you are careful and patient, you will never have to worry about it again. Even if your odo is working great, that gear will crumble in the next few years, that is why I reccomend replacing it while you have the cluster out.

The way the 20+ miles would 'fix' the speedo, I thought it was some temperature dependent issue with the magnetic device atop the transfer box.

What was your resolution to this issue? Mine just started acting up in the same way.
Speedometer hangs on 0 from a stop until the car hits roughly 20. At that point the speedometer pops up and is accurate until the car comes to a stop and repeats the same thing again.
