Default Used the towing eye tap

As some of you find out when coming to use your towing eye, the aluminium plug proves impossible to remove and requires drilling out, having got the plug out the towing eye still won’t screw fully home because of corrosion and bits of the plug left behind in the threads.

I have just used the tap that John Pitman had made and so kindly made available to us to solve this problem, thanks John and thanks to Alan for his time in setting this scheme up.

After drilling out the plug my towing eye would only screw in a turn or two, using the tap is simple enough, make sure it goes in straight, use some oil for lubrication, every few turns back out the tap a turn or so to clear the swarf and debris, in my case very little effort was needed to turn the tap to clear the threads. Afterwards I used some brake cleaner to blast the threads clean and then oiled the threads, now the towing eye screws fully home.

I hope I’ll never need to use it but at least I know it will screw in.

Aluminum maybe wasn't the best choice for a plug here, huh?

Brass brush in a drill would have also done the trick.

There are rubber plugs that fit well, available at marine supply outlets...see the thread in the 928 section. Maybe there is even an official Porsche part. This tap may fit other models that use the 20mmOD Knuckle thread? Actually 0.8"x8tpi.

This is the standard rubber plug that came with later model years..

I added a couple wraps of black tape for a tighter fit.
