Default New Member Intro & 928 question

Hello All -

I've just joined this list after lurking for years. I'm a long time Porsche owner and amateur mechanic, my first car (1979) was a 1.7L 914 that I re-built as a 916. After that I bought a 924 Turbo in 89 meaning to convert it to a 924 GT but it got wrecked by some dip in a Fiat right after I'd finished restoring the suspension and turbocharger. It was a sweet car and I miss it. In '85 I bought a 928S and I've had it ever since. In fact I have two now, I bought a parts car on eBay a few years ago, I was lucky enough to find the same year, same options and same color so if anyone out there needs parts for a black on black 85 let me know. I plan to strip everything useable off the chassis then send the engine in for new cylinder sleeves before I build it to a supercharged track car.

In the meantime, I have a question. I'm doing the 60K service on my street car (that's right, I only have 60K on it. It's a garage queen). So I've never changed any of the belts on the car and I've got everything off but the A/C compressor belt and the Power Steering pump belt and I can't get them off for the life of me. There doesn't seem to be enough clearance for me to move either of the pumps close enough to the block to get the belt off.

BTW, the reason I'm doing this is to replace the timing belt, which I haven't gotten close to yet. I imagine I may be asking more questions later, but for now I'm stuck.

There has to be something simple I'm doing wrong. Any clues?

Regards,
Scott.

On my cars, I have either taken the 3 bolts holding the pulley off or the bolts holding the pump to get the belt off. I also do not seem to get enough slack by just moving the adjuster all the way.

If everything is clean you should be able to adjust it out.

If you are driving on a 27 year old timing belt you need to go buy a Lottery ticket !!!! You are so far past due that if it were my car I would not start the engine.

As Brutus said - Stand away from the car

Well, the timing belt was replaced when I replaced the water pump at about 45K. I haven't started the car other than to put it up on the rack in over 4 years so no worries

Every thing is pretty clean. I haven't pressure washed it, but there aren't any sticks or rocks jammed anywhere.

I think I'll give this a try. Thanks.

You might want to reconsider. "I plan to strip everything useable off the chassis then send the engine in for new cylinder sleeves before I build it to a supercharged track car." and do some more research. Thus far no supercharged 928 has ever done well as a race car or lasted very long when pressed hard on track.

The popcorn icon? It's in the icon menu.

I think I was where you are once, taking a car all apart and doing stuff to an engine. If you want to kick around ideas that would be fun.

I like your car history. Welcome aboard! What car did you buy in 1985?

I certainly will. I don't have much experience racing 928's, a friend has one he's built for the track but never actually run it. The truth is I don't know what to do with the chassis after I'm done stripping it, the supercharger sounded kind of interesting. I'll do more research.

Another friend used to race 935's at Watkins Glen and he was always telling me about the advantages of variable boost on those cars, he said when the track was even just damp they had to dial the boost down to zero or they'd spin them. That's one of the things I don't like about superchargers, you can't turn them off. Then again, the balance on a 928 is so much better than a 935 I'm not sure it would be as big a problem.

Regards,
Scott.

I was talking about your avatar picture not the popcorn icon

Thanks, I bought the 928S in '85, the way I wrote the history was a little confused. I picked up the 931 in '89, it was going to be a gift for my wife. After I spent six months under it replacing the turbo and the front suspension I got hit by a guy in a Fiat sedan while I was taking it in to fill it with gas so she could drive it for the first time. Totaled the car, they pulled me out through the moon roof and I came to in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It was really tragic, I got the car for $4000 from a guy that didn't know what he had (he got it from someone who owed him money). I doubt I'll ever get a deal like that again. On the upside, I lived.
