Over time, the more parts and covers you need to take off to access the engine, the more connectors etc get broken and damaged. I don't think it is a clever long term design, but I guess Porsche only think a short time into future in terms of servicing.

Here is a great Audi example.
Stock B5 S4 motor with all the plastic factory covers. (I actually had a hard time finding a picture of one with ALL the covers on it.
An what most end up looking like (not as fancy, but without the covers, this one still has the stock air intake which most loose)

Interesting trade-offs to ponder ... if a mfg can use 100k mile plugs and other extended-life service items, does that give them license to make the eventual servicing more complicated and time-consuming? If it costs $4K to do a service, but only needs to be done at 100k, maybe the customer will accept it in terms of dollars/mile?

This is not a big Dodge Ram pickup where you can really make the engine compartment and length as long and big as you want and nobody will really care.

I particularly admire the way all that work is being done without fender (buttock?) covers....

Now that over 1/2 of all Porsches sold are 4 door cars/trucks. They are building transportation cars to be used up and thrown away not long term collector cars. They could care less what happens to a Cheyenne that is ten years old. They are in business to sell NEW cars and the sooner the old ones go away the better the chance of selling a new one.

Totally disagree with this. The build quality of the new cars farm surpasses that of the 20 year old stuff.
Porsche still needs to make quality cars, period. Making stuff that is worthlesss in 10 years will deter people from buying new ones.
There are several 250,000+ mile Cayennes and 996s out there.

Sorry but you are grossly underestimating how quickly and expensively these new high tech Porsches will fade away. Why is a 993 worth twice what a 996 is worth. Have you priced what it costs to fix your tire pressure sensor system ? And when that cool dash /nav /radio goes away ? One need only look at big BMW , Mercedes to see what the best of the best is worth 10-15 years old and the more computers and displays just makes it worse. It was a deliberate decision by Porsche management to expand the product line and build transportation cars high tech expensive but transportation. Designed to be used and driven not coveted in the garage for the occasional weekend use.

Because it was the last of an enthusiast quirk about air cooling and a sexier car than a 996. That and the 996 was produced in much higher quantity and is still a newer car.
Yes, it's $450. So what? You can run with it shut off if you want.
Have you priced 944 control arms?
Lots of options for repair or replacement! How many of the cars we appreciate today are running factory stereo systems? Seriously love both or my old Porsches but neither one have a single piece of the factory stereo system in them
Take the 928 for example!! They hanged everything the company had ever done to try to design a car that could be used everyday, all the time for TRANSPORTATION, they even designed a factory hitch for the thing so you could tow your camper with it
BTW, my emotionless transportation only Cayenne Turbo will smoke any 928 in any contest stock for stock, so obviously Porsche was just compromising to make a quick buck and not designing a seller car
