Default Fuel tanks interchange?

Will a later fuel tank fit on an earlier car, e.g. a 1980-1995 tank in a 1979?

There are 3 variants listed :-
928-201-003-03 78-82
928-201-003-05 83-90
928-201-003-08 91-95

No idea from pet what the changes are though....All I can suggest is tyou should be okj using an -03 up to 82. I swapped in a used tank I bought, with no thought about what year it came from, and had no problems.

Early tanks which were done before intank pump was invented were different shape. These changes are probably not properly listed in PET.

If the change was to accommodate the in tank pump, then it would seem likely that late would go into early cars, but the other way around would mean problems re in tank pump fitment.

I've just checked both mine and can't see any difference that would prevent interchangeability, the pump/strainer wells look the same, as does the whole underside. Another 928 mystery.

If someone has a late model tank out maybe they could post pics of the different elevations ... I have pics of my 82 tank.

I put a 82 tank in my 89 a few weeks ago with no problems. I wanted to delete the intank pump anyway.

Tank, mount and cover plate are all different. Early vs late in not direct fit in any direction unless all three are changed. Early can mean just very early '78 MY. I haven't checked when exactly change was done.
