Default Intermittent CASIS

I realize the CASIS indicator isn't all that important in itself, but ...

It had stopped working until yesterday when I rolled through a bumpy stretch of road. Now it's working again. Maybe I'm making an incorrect causal connection. But if the shaking fixed it, what should I be looking for? Loose wire? If yes, where?

Thanks
Hugo

The pod is a common source for loose connections. I'd recommend taking it out and just generally cleaning all the connections. Not sure if the '84 is the same as my '85 but I'm sure it's not far off. At least once a year I like to remove the pod and work the multipin connectors to get a clean connection, just unplug and re-plug them a few times and check for any corrosion. Check for cold solder on the 'boards' and reflow anything that's visibly cracked.

You could also pull out and then put back in all of the bulbs to make sure those have good contact.

Here in NJ we have lots of humidity all year round and if you're anywhere near the shore you get salt in your condensation as well from the ocean so corrosion is a real problem with any connection that's exposed to the air in any way.

I'm a-feared of removing the pod, but it would be nice to take care of the burned out high-beam bulb and leftmost instrument bulb.

Are you aware of any good step-by-step guides?

Hugo, since your car is pre-airbag it's a breeze to pull it out. You just need to stretch first because you'll be laying on your back under the dash to see the things you need to remove for a while. Get comfy in there.

Here are a few. Mine is the last one, Dwayne is famous for his awesome write-ups. In fact if you want to learn a lot, just do a search on any thread he's started and you'll see enough to write a book. (BTW- Dwayne if you are interested I would LOVE to make a book out of your posts, I think it would do really well and helps lots of people. Let me know ).

Definitely could be a loose/bad connection on the back of the cluster. It is worth noting that I rebuilt the gauge cluster in my '84 with copper wires to replace the flexible circuit sheet. This solved the inop. speedo and gauge accuracy issues. But it didn't fix the CASIS system. Occasionally it will start working when driving, but if I shut off the car and restart, it stops working. Other times the bulb lights up when I first turn the key on and remains lit once the engine is started, and won't go out no matter what the engine/road speed is. I suspect something wrong with the tach itself, as the WSM says that if all the inputs to it are good, the unit must be replaced.

The plot thickens.

I haven't had a chance to do anything pod-wise, but I had occasion to drive the car at night a few days ago and found that the instrument lighting and console lighting no longer work (turning the dimmer wheel on left underside of pod doesn't help). I've read a few threads, but wanted to narrow down what I should be looking for.

What is working:
1. Ashtray light turns on when I turn on the parking/headlights
2. Small bulb in headlight switch works.
3. All gauges work

The above tells me it;'s not a fuse, right?

Might it be only the dimmer rheostat that has failed? Or is there another component that can fail that produces the same symptom?

I think it stands for Computer Aided Shift Indication System. Not sure if it was required by government or not, but many manual trans US cars in the early 80's had one to help with fuel economy. The light turns on when you should shift.

Remember, we had just come ouf of the second fuel crisis in 1979.

My 2008 Suby GT has this feature when you set it in Economy mode , but I only set it on that when She is taking it out in wet weather.
