Much that I enjoy the features that the 928 has I believe its just Porsches take on the Ferrari 365 gtb4 designed 11 years earlier. The ferrari had a smaller displacement and achieved 174mph using webbers not fi and had a 5sp transaxle as well. I think the best clean sheet design is here. http://press.porsche.com/news/release.php?id=642

I'm a lot older than most of you guys but shortly after I bought my 928S4 in 1987, Porsche came out with a model that they only made a few of called the 95*. Can't remember the last number (that's what age does to you). It was pretty clean sheet.

How about the 1953 Corvette. GM seemed to hate sports cars and they suddenly came out with a bunch of "sporty" cars with the Corvette becoming the real thing as time went on. I bought a 1962 in 62 with the fuel injected 327 engine. Pretty nice car.

I believe you mean the 959 which was closely tied to the 911 of the era. Had a number of interesting features but basic chassis and roof line screams 911. Running a 2.8 liter engine was an odd choice.
