A couple of tips
I discovered a couple of things recently.
The first is a new way to tell is a 32 valve head has a bent valve. The cam can be turned with the lobe up and measure under the cam with a feeler gauge. If the feeler gauge displaces the lifter then the valve is not bent. If there is free space under the cam then the valve is bent. This is a good way to check an engine out of the car.
The second was the use of the older flywheel lock on newer engines. While the bolt holes do not line up the lock does engage the flywheel gears and can be locked in place with a pair of vice grips. This worked much better than I had anticipated. I did not try things the other way around.

Both these saved me some time. I hope they can help others.
