Default ABS plug-in

I looked around but can't seem to find it again in the search, but does it matter in which hole the sensor plugs into on the barrel at the caliper or can you even swap them. I haven't checked the plug ends to see if they are different sizes or shapes but I have one that looks like it is not seated al the way and won't go in any further. Any info would be great, Thanks, Jack

Plug ends are different between each one.

Jack, please keep us posted on your progress, My antilock light comes on everytime out of the driveway. I believe my issue is the relay as it rattles when I take it out and shake it. Well try a new one soon but you have to admit, these brakes on the 86.5 are pretty darn awsome even wtihout the ABS. I pulled my sensors one at a time when I did the brakes this past weekend and there were tons of crud on the ends of each one. I cleand the sensors and the surrounding areas and put them back in but still have the light. Next step, check the relays.

A relay shouldn't rattle...

Fraggle, that is what I thought also. I just haven't had time to open it up to have a look or replace it. The brakes are pretty darn awsome without it but I definately want it fixed.

My brakes are great also, but tired of that red light shinning. Hope to go back thru all the connections this weekend.

You and mee too. I will find it eventually. That darn relay is expensive as heck. I looked it up last night. Have you removed yorus and shaked it. Mine rattles like there is something loose inside. I am hopeing that is the issue.

I will find it sooner or later. Please post your progress and I will too. Maybe between the two of us we will figure it out. There are also 2 relays on the ABS module under the hood on the drivers side.

When I get finished checking all the sensors I will recheck the relays, I replaced he one under the dash no change, so I may have a spare. I pulled and cleaned the connections on the two in the fender well, I still feel its a sensor issue so I'm going to test those this weekend. Will see how it goes.

Well, I would definatley be interested if you have a spare. There are 2 speed connectors under the hood. One on each shock tower about half way down. I made the mistake of opening the lock on the one on the passenger side. Inside is a white barrel type holder that the connectors go into. Mine crumbled like old sand right in my hand. I bought some water proof connectors and wired them together like they were before. This could be part of my problem.

We shall see. You know that the light means the ABS is not working. Ray told me that if any issue arrises with the ABS it shuts itsself down. If the breaks are as good as they are without the ABS, imagine what they will be like once we get it fixed?

Just tested the rear sensors while on the car, unplugged from the barrel. They both ohm'ed at 00.1 on the auto setting with my meter, I have no idea what this means but I have three additional ones out of the car that test out about .985 to 1.0. Any info would be great. Thanks

The sensor should read approx 1000 ohms between the two wires. You need to test the sensors while in place on the car as you also need to test each wire to ground. Short to ground is a common failure of the sensor. If you have approx 0 ohms between any sensor wire and ground then thats your problem

Tested, all read between 1.0 and .985 ohm's which seems to be correct. Tested the connections in the battery box and got 20.1 on both the left and the right, have no idea about that number. Cleaned all the grounds while I was right there now going for a ride to test, we'll see.

Ok took the 86.5 out for a while the light still came on but a couple of new things started, before the light would come on and I would not be able to reset now I can reset it. It might be unrelated but after cleaning the grounds in the wheel well the fuel pump started whining, probably unrelated, yes I do have a full tank and I think it is the original pump. I don't think while starting the car that the anti-lock light even comes on, but when I start rolling forward after thirty feet or so it comes on.. Any futher testing ideas would be a great help. Thanks, Jack

Well, I visited Mark Benton today to pickup a trans and he had an ABS relay. I put it in before leaving for home and while rolling out of his driveway it was working. No light, It used to come on right away when putting it in drive, it waited about 45 seconds then came back on. Oh, well, on to the next test.

Good luck with yours,
